MyBB Since Josh is staying: Hire Herb Sendek as Assistant
No brainer.

Herb might not have gotten the job done as a head coach, but look at the assistants he has cultivated:

Thad Matta
Archie Miller
Sean Miller
John Groce

All of those guys have gotten to a S16 at the least.

Josh needs a veteran assistant and Herb has been great with molding young guys with the "it" factor into successful head coaches. Pastner had that "it" factor at one point and perhaps he just needs guidance.

Thoughts?

I guess it depends on how well Josh's personality interacts with assistants who have been former head coaches. SOME coaches feel threatened and wouldn't do that.
If he has a PRAYER of turning this all around...he needs to do something new...something he hasn't done before...something radical.
I don't care if it means pissing on a sparkplug.

With the basketball budget I doubt if there will be enough money to hire Sendek.

I'd take it in a heartbeat, but like others have said, the egos of head coaches tend to supercede all.
Would Sendek TAKE an assistant position, and would JP LISTEN to an assistant, regardless of experience?

If Sendek would take it, then go for it...if JP doesn't listen to him, well, that's his problem.

Well, there are a lot of guys that would be a no brainer as his assistant, but does anyone WANT the job?

RE: Since Josh is staying: Hire Herb Sendek as Assistant
Without even trying to create a list I have noticed these "old" head coaches on benches:

Norm Roberts (St. John's) assistant to Bill Self
James Dickey (Houston) to Travis Ford
Bobby Lutz (UNCC) to Mark Gottfried
Dave Dickerson (Tulane) to Thad Matta

Herb is making money this year sitting on his ass. I'm sure banking a couple other dollas in the meantime won't hurt him.

Plus it keeps him in the circuit for potential other jobs.

Anthony Grant is another one, if he'd do it.

It won't be a wow hire IMO.

If Capel takes the ASU job Josh needs to take Capel's spot on the Duke bench.

Josh's revolving door of assistants is almost as impressive as his list of kids who have transferred out of his program. No experienced former HC with options is going to come and work for Josh.

See, I don't see Grant as the "sage" bench guy to help Josh learn the job better.

I'm sure Herb is a reach, BUT the fact he has a proven ability to teach younger guys is a huge plus.

Can we get Doris Burke? She seems to have a grasp on how badly we do things and things we should be doing. She knows her stuff.

I like Grant because at least he has a system - he didn't have success at Alabama, but he appears to like to run and press to a degree.

So, budgetary concerns for Asst coach pay have caused the problems with the basketball program? I did not know that.

Duh.

Herb made $1.8MM this past year. Perhaps, he thinks he would be "worth" $500,000 as an assistant.

Well, there is NO way Memphis could afford that for an assistant when you already have $2.65 locked up in the h.c.

I think he's just saying Sendek is making millions after the buyout and making a few hundred K to be an assistant is chump change.
