Most of those who were around then were probably drunk at the time, but on March 17, 1985, Keith Lee dropped 28 points on UAB in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to win a nail-biter, 67-66. Of course, they were all nail biters that year.

Andre Turner had 23 points and 8 assists, and Vincent Askew began his strange, four game streak of refusing to shooting.

Remember that game like it was yesterday, I was at a freind's house whose parents had season tickets since the Coliseum opened and his Mom was as loud as we were.

Been discussed ad nauseum-Askew had NOT been told not to shoot; he said that he was a freshman and had 2 of the best bigs in CBB and was going to feed them the ball. Andre was shooting a lot also. Confirmed by 3 other players on team with no reason to lie.

He went 1-3 with 7 assists against UAB, 1-3 with 8 assists against BU, 0-1 with just 1 assist in 37 minutes against Oklahoma, and 1-3 with 7 assists against Nova.

It a pretty remarkable stretch.

???

Im almost certain that Lee only scored maybe 8 points in that game. That might not be exact but no way he scored 28 points in that game. I watched the replay of that game so many times as a kid I almost have the whole thing memorized…..

bedford gave us a 12-4 lead early
uab comes back from james ponders shooting and leads 32-27 at the half
i remember Gordons dunk late to give uab a 6 point lead and looking like the win
of course lee fouled out in OT, turner with the game winner, and Gene Bartow stomping all over the floor and chasing down the refs

Bluto claims it was because Askew was a freshman who was deferring to his more experienced teammates.

I'm having trouble pulling up the stats on GoTigerGo, but here is a NY Times article that matches the box score I posted earlier.

It does mention Gene Bartow not being happy:

He did pile up a lot of assists, except for the Oklahoma game.

Bartow was upset that Steve Mitchell didn't get a foul call on a game winning jumper. That was why he was angry. I never saw him get that mad when he was at Memphis.

Yea, I checked the box score. I cant believe after all I can remember about that game, I can't remember Lee scoring 28. I remember him scoring the first 2 buckets but I thought he went cold. Overall he had a pretty poor tournament limited by foul problems
