Lee had gotten into foul trouble in the Penn game, and only played 20 minutes, scoring 8 points. I think Memphis State was down 8 in the second half.

Askew actually did shoot in that game, hitting 6 of 10. He only took 10 more shots over the next 4 games:

It's amazing how tight all of these tournament games were for the Tigers.

That was the tourney where we played with the shot clock all year but the tournet had not adopted it yet. We were down something like 11 points at the half against Penn and I thought for sure that they would be able to wait us out. I still don't know how we made that come back.

Oddly enough I was in Birmingham at Legion Field for a Memphis Showboats - Birmingham Stallions USFL game that was taking place at the same time as the UAB-Tigers game. Everybody had their transistor radios out and listening, the crowd moaning and cheering with every basket. Finally there was a collective loud, painful moan from the crowd while across the field a huge cheer from the busload of Showboats fans that had made the trip. I knew then the Tigers had won.

Wow, 30 years since the Showboats. Was '85 the last year?

There was a Dana Kirk interview from 2008 where he mentions the absence of a shot clock as being a big problem for the Tigers.

You can listen to that here, along with an interview with Denny Crum after Kirk died.

Here's something else I just found from this game. Kirk was protesting a phantom basket:

Had Memphis State lost by a point, everyone connected with the team would have said the Tigers were beaten by a basket that wasn't a basket.

With 12:20 to play in the first half, Alabama Birmingham's Archie Johnson appeared to dunk the ball. The officiating crew, headed by Hank Nichols of the Atlantic Coast Conference, saw it as a two-pointer. But Kirk, a lot of other people and CBS television cameras saw something else.

Johnson stuck the ball in the hole with so much force that his hands pounded down on the rim and forced it to bend toward the floor. When the rim whipped back into position, the net popped and flipped the ball out.

Was BC also the one that we made the 10 point comeback in 15 or 20 seconds or something crazy like that?
