Yep.
They would be better off in the MWC, and the MWC would be better off to get into Texas.
Only, if you're going to partake of the Texas apple, don't nibble. Take a huge bite. Get the SA/Hou/Dall markets all at once. They will take all 4.
A MWC-16 makes a lot of geographic sense with 2 divisions on each side of the Rockies.
Hawaii
San Diego State
Fresno State
San Jose State
UNLV
Nevada
Boise State
Utah State
Wyoming
Colorado State
Air Force
New Mexico
UTEP
UTSA
Rice

The market strategy will be a failure when teams that CUSA passed over like GS,App,ULL and Ark St play in the G5 bowl a couple of times. At that point, CUSA would have lost money as a result of not adding these schools. Until that happens it is probably a wash.

We were dead last G5 this year and they finished second. Whatever strategy they chose seems to be working out ok...

It won't stop the inevitable dropoff in their TV deal, which is supposed to be the reason for acquiring markets in the first place.

At the end of the day are they better off with MTSU, FAU, FIU, WKU, NT or GS, App, ULL, Ark St, GaSt?
I think the second group will be better in football with one possibly having a Boise type run. I don't see any chance of that from the first group.

JMU most certainly wouldn't be a market addition. The city is smaller than Jonesboro and metro area the same.
JMU has about 30,000 alumni who live in a 30 mile radius of the Washington, D.C. city center. That was attractive, along with their facilities, their academics and the fact that their FCS football program is pretty good.
It is always better to have a large TV market, but if the product on the field or court is not interesting, the TV ratings will not be there. If you live in New York, there must be a hundred better things to do than watch the Knicks play.
30k. So if 100% of them tune into a JMU telecast it would draw a rating of 0.5 in the DC TV market.
I remember the Troy AD calling JMU "the plum out there" and that "the D.C. television market would be a huge asset to our league as well." That is the attraction of JMU. Even as a FCS program they get radio coverage through out Virginia, including the D.C. area.
JMU is 120 miles from D.C and 120 miles from Richmond, the state capitol. The D.C. TV market is the 9th largest in the country and if the Sun Belt can get access to that market in any way that would be huge.

id still rather have the first set of teams over the additions of Georgia state, Idaho snd NMSU. You can't cherry pick the good teams and leave off the terrible additions. Bottom line is any conference has a shot at landing a team in a G5 bowl. Unfortunately were the only conference to never place a team in the top 25.

And the year before, weren't they dead last while we were first?
It's way too early to say whether their model is working or not anyway. Let's look at it in 5 years to see which approach worked best (and even then, that's way too premature).

I'm not comparing CUSA vs the SBC overall, but simply stating that since CUSA could cherry pick who they wanted, the choices they made will come back to bite them as I believe the second group will perform much better on the field. As far as the top 25 issue, none of the teams that left the SBC had been in the top 25 so the conference odds of ending that have not decreased.

You can look at their TV numbers, their attendance, their recruiting, etc. and see that it isn't making a difference. We have the same issues but evidence is mounting that the market strategy failed as expected.
Not trying to boost them but, compared to what? What exactly is the expectation level and what is it based on? I think the jury is still out and will be for years. And if it's not working why are so many SBC members actively trying to get in there?

All of that is made up hyperbole. 3 years ago Memphis football was circling the drain and barely had 70 scholarship players. Now they are world beaters. You can't predict that. You don't know what additions are good or bad until a decade later. And it's not all about one sport. We are ranked in the 20's as a MBB conference. That is not good. In five years maybe we can say an addition was good or bad.

Hey, Massaro is the one drinking cocktails and popping off. I agree his logic makes zero sense. I am betting though that he isn't pushing us because they basically live in Atlanta for recruiting.

I agree that GaSt and GS are a big threat to MTSU as they rely very heavily on the state of GA for recruiting.

A lot of this is relationships too. Massaro almost seems to be making a point for ODU. Conversely, Levick was so toxic and was a former CUSA AD that nobody would dare couch for us. Cobb will have a long hard job repairing what she deep sixed.

RE: AD Says Liberty Good Expansion Candidate
"While TV markets have driven much of conference realignment, it isn't always as big a factor for conferences like C-USA. In recent years the conference has primarily added schools from bigger markets, though also dipped into areas like Murfreesboro, Tenn. (Middle Tennessee State) and Bowling Green, Ky. (Western Kentucky).
The conference now has six schools in the nation's Top 50 television markets, including Miami, Houston and Charlotte, but its TV rights deal pales in comparison to Power 5 conferences. How popular a school actually is in its market can be just as, if not more, important than the market size.
"We'll have to factor in what's the penetration of that school in that particular TV market and how many sets they turn on," Rice AD Karlgaard said. "You can be in a big market and not turn on many sets, or in a small market and turn on a lot. In that sense, it's a wash."
A prime example is UAB. Birmingham is consistently the top-rated market for college football television viewing, yet the school has had issues with its football game attendance for decades. Just because a city is big, or even if it loves college football like Birmingham, it doesn't make the school itself benefits.
The more important factor could be finding a good geographic fit. The conference has a huge footprint, ranging from Old Dominion in Virginia to Florida International to Texas El-Paso, making traveling a costly endeavor for most schools. C-USA would need to add a school that not only adds to the bottom line, but won't considerably increase travel costs."
Can it be some writers and conference officials are FINALLY coming to their senses in the conference realignment madness? CUSA's CEO's need to kick Banowsky to the curb and replace him with Rice's AD. This guy ctually gets it.
