Slingbox
I am moving part-time to Milwaukee, but keeping my house here in Ohio. Going to be commuting back and fort between the two places.

I want to keep my Ohio cable system and use a Slingbox (or something similar) to see my Ohio cable channels in Milwaukee.

Any of you folks have any experience with this and could maybe walk me through it over email or on here?

RE: Slingbox
I've had a Slingbox for years - love it. I travel a lot for work, and this enables me to keep up with the Bearcats and Reds - without an MLB.com subscription (which wouldn't work anyway given my home zip code is in the blackout zone).

Setup is super easy - you just need the device on which you'll watch on the same network as the Slingbox one time. After that, it just works. It does sometimes require a hard restart, so it's nice to have someone at home who can pull the plug on the main box if necessary.

Good luck - you'll love it. And much cheaper than all of the online subscriptions you'd need to keep up.

RE: Slingbox
Actually with MLBtv if you were to have a sub then when you are away from the restricted area it would allow you to watch the Reds no matter the billing zip code. The player actually detects where you re at the time.

We use it to watch the Mariners despite our billing zip code being in their 'home market' of Portland.

And if you're in the "wrong" spot, this is where proxies come in.

RE: Slingbox
OK, I saw a version for about $150, and 1 for about $250. The $250 one had HDMI output.

If I want to watch on a HD TV, I assume I need the $250 one?

Or does the Slingbox connect to me local cable, in which case what does it matter which version I get?

RE: Slingbox
Another way to do this is to add a receiver to your Ohio home then take that receiver with you to Milwaukee. Install Directv in Milwaukee, then after the installer leaves just switch out your Ohio receiver box with the Milwaukee receiver box. I did this for years when I moved out of Cincy. This way you can watch whatever channels you want without worrying about having to have to the slingbox set to a specific channel and you're not dependent on internet speed for good picture quality.

I have done this too.

It was actually a suggestion from the DirecTv installer.

Love the suggestion. This is a great work around.
