MyBB Who is the next Cam Payne?
So by now we can all admit that we missed out on Cam Payne.

I don't place much blame on the staff - payne ended up at Murray State for a reason...a lot of people missed on him. He's made them all look foolish.

However, my hope is that the staff would learn from this and improve on evaluating talent.

That being said, who is the next Cam Payne? Who is the next local kid that we will look back on 2-3 years from now and say, "how did we miss out on this kid?!"

Is there one? Or are the Cam Paynes of the world few and far between?

FWIW, there is one kid that sticks out in my mind

I like Vick's game, but he's a Top 150 guy. Some services even have him as a 4-star. He isn't really as "under the radar" as Payne was, but Memphis has passed on him nonetheless so I see your point.

Strikes me as more of an Andre Hollins deal (though I think AH was a better player than LV). Everyone knew he could hoop - he just didn't end up here. Looking back, we aren't "surprised" he's as good as he is at Minnesota - we are pretty surprised at Cam Payne. At least I am ...

How about the McNeal kid from Jackson Southside then?

3 star PG, played AAU with a Memphis team I think, signed with Western Kentucky.

If we could pick the next Cam Payne before they became the next Cam Payne we wouldn't call them the next Cam Payne.

Does any one else find his name odd?

We are starting a campaign to find the next Cam Payne!

You know what I meant - the next 3 star, overlooked player out of Memphis that ends up at a small conf. school and turns into a really solid player.

Can't say I'm familiar. But the kid I was thinking about is marlon Hunter at Houston High School. Also headed to WKU

I brought him up 3 years ago ...

RE: Who is the next Cam Payne?
Would Pastner really have developed Cam Payne here? Or maybe rather, would Cam Payne have developed at Memphis (under Pastner)?

What player has ever developed under Pastner, to any level that other fanbases would say "how did we miss this kid"? All I've seen is blue-chips maintaining their status or dropping off.

DJ? DJ had freakish hoops and he caught alley-oops.

There are so many many kids in Memphis who will go on the play college ball that it is impossible to tell.

Craigmont's Teverett Cain

John Varlas ‏@johnvarlas Feb 25

No AA boys teams from Memphis at state this year. Ripley defeats Craigmont, 68-60. Great year by the Chiefs. Now go sign T-Cain!
