What program do you think Memphis is most similar to?

Personally, I don't think it's unreasonable to think Memphis should be like a Villanova on average. That means a team with a national reputation of being tough-nosed that occasionally has really good years but who is usually always pretty good. Villanova typically features local or regional players, they don't get pushed around, they are well coached, and people respect their brand.

That's what Memphis should be.

We should be on par with Louisville in both FB and BB. Similar size, metro school, not the state school - we have a lot in common with them and used to be on par with them. They just had a better AD for a lot of years.

Yep. But that was then. This is now. Villanova is a good comparison

Memphis should be like Alabama in football and Kentucky in basketball. Sounds good to me.

ESPN had us ranked around 16-19 in basketball since around 1990. That means we make Sweet 16 at least 2 of 4 years. Football is still up in air.

The OP asked who Memphis "should" be similar to, not who we are "currently" similar to.

The top 16 to 19 range teams average a Sweet 16 every other year? I'm not looking up stats, but just looking at that, it seem a bit high.

I remeber when our whole bench was filled with staff from Arizona. The Walton hire set Black back along with the Williams hire.

It's hard to compare - not many programs have the kind of talent in their own backyard that Memphis does. Players that a lot of the time want nothing more than to play for the hometown program. Not many programs play in an NBA arena either.

In reality, if you sign the best Memphis players, then you should be top 25 every year.

Since 2010, Memphis has produced:

Skal
Nichols
Stokes
Tarik
Adonis
Dedric Lawson
KJ Lawson
Leron Black
Markel
Chris Crawford
Joe
Chris Jones
JW3
Mayo
Payne
Chiozza
King
Andre Hollins
Austin Hollins

And on and on and on.

I mean, Southeast Missouri has 4 Memphis kids on the roster.

Just a ton of DI players that come out of the city every year and the cream of the crop almost guarantees you're top 25.

You can say Villanova has Philly hotbed or DePaul has Chicago hotbed, but it's just different there than it is here.

I find the Villanova comparison interesting, and to be honest I wouldn't have thought of them. However, you make a good point.

Although your question pertained to basketball, I'd like to say in basketball AND football, Louisville and Cincinnati are worthy comparisons/aspirations. Urban schools, good brand, football that is getting better (they are ahead of us here), passionate fan base. Both have intra-state rivals, and both are surrounded by P5 schools (now, Louisville is P5). All three of us have had runs where basketball was among the best in the country.

Depends on whether your talking about from a results basis or a style of play basis. Since most of us are more interested in results, I'll go with that and say Memphis should consistently be on a level with programs like Villanova, Arizona, Gonzaga and Baylor.
