What evidence? There was no evidence of an assault in either case.

I believe pictures of Darren Wilson with marks on his face and a busted lip were presented as evidence that an assault took place. Same with Zimmerman with the cuts on the back of his head.

Perhaps it was evidence that they were hurt in some way during the event. However, it doesn't prove tha it occurred because of an assault.

By event you mean the assault?

The marks didn't occur after shots were fired.

By definition, an assault is to physically strike someone. So yes assault happened.
