2019 6’9 Ben Beeker of Hendersonville (NC) has committed to Furman University
Surpassed by Furman in the recruiting world....
A two season record of 21-45 is not exactly ringing endorsement.
Lol UNCW never even offered Beeker a scholarship. Not everything has to be a knock on the staff. SMH.
Didn't realize he wasn't offered. Wonder why not?

Blessed to receive a D1 Offer from the University of North Carolina Wilmington!
Billy Donlon just offered Tolefree at UMKC.
I'm all for rooting for Billy Donlon's success... but not at the expense of him swooping in on our recruits.

It sucks that he's from Kansas as well! That's a bummer. I hope that he still likes his chances here though. We could use a guy with his athleticism and driving ability.

Observationally, the M.O. in the McGrath era has been to get guys in an almost stealth manner. You haven't heard much about us recruiting them...the BANG they are committed.
Seems to me that McGrath has a system that he hell bent on using, regardless of whether it fits the group of players he has at the moment - so he may as well go get the players that fit that system ASAP if he can. I have been basically impressed with the quality of the guys this coaching team has recruited heretofore. So I am going to operate on the assumption that our coach's strong point is recruiting and that he is going to get the players he wants/needs to run the system he wants to run...

RE: Recruit Updates
I'm not concerned about this one honestly. At 6'3, Brewton was gonna have a hard time starting with Gadsden and Toews already in place. Also, I believe the staff offered Brewton early on, and cooled on him. This is all speculation... Now a guy like Kennedy Koehler, who plays a position of need for us and also doesn't have any offers from schools higher than UNCW is a guy they need to land. The only thing going against us with him is he's from Las Vegas, so he might want to stay closer to home. CCU was probably just a better fit for Brewton.

Agree that it isn't a position of huge need, but we did offer the kid and he chose Coastal Carolina over us. When recruits start choosing Coastal Carolina over us, that is concerning. Regardless, it is April 18th and as of right now, we basically have 7 players for next year. We need to add 6 to 8 new players in the next 60 days or so. I can't imagine there is a ton of high level talent left out there that is uncommitted at this point.

I think you are over reacting a bit. Don't think kids don't look at the situation they would be going too and see the competition that's there. Maybe Coastal has more of a need in that role, which would result in almost a guarantee of immediate significant playing time. All these things factor

Huge overreaction. Go back and look at this thread a year ago, people had the same concerns, and the staff landed Gadsden, O’ Connell, and Linnsen. The truth is you only need 9 or 10 scholarship players to be successful. The last 3 or 4 scholarships are either transfers, redshirts, or plain bench warmers. I’ve followed our recruiting the whole season and never thought Brewton was a good fit. While the staff concerns me in some areas, recruiting is not one. Let’s let everything fall in place before we hit the panic button lol.

Losing a recruit to Coastal is not an embarrassment. We have many similarities being near the beach. Losing a recruit to EZU. Now that's embarrassing.

RE: Recruit Updates
Recruiting concerns this late are valid depsite attempts to deflect. We just lost a lot of players in the second year of the McGrath era. Yes, we landed Linssen and Gasden, but McGrath basically had a "pass" on year one for a horrible record. Sorry, but in the minds of potential recruits a bad first year, followed by a worse last place finish second year, followed by a slew of transfers doesn't inspire confidence.
Let's not forget, it's EASY for potential recruits to contact the players who transferred out and get their opinion on UNCW. What do you think Elmore, Gary, Fornes and Taylor will say to a recruit about coming to UNCW to play basketball?

Seems just as easy for them to chat with current players on what it's like, why they stayed, etc.
I get your point, but there's always the other side of the coin. Unless you're a magician with one of those double-faced coins.

RE: Recruit Updates
It’s honestly quite laughable the concerns coming from not getting a recruit. It’s a big reach to think a recruit is going to randomly reach out to someone that transferred out of the program unless they knew them previously. Gotta love the yearly late signing period “concerns”... it’s one recruit guys, there’s not a staff in college basketball that gets everyone they offer.

If you don't think recruits would reach out to players who transferred out of a program to find out why, you're kidding yourself. It's one click on a phone that they use to communicate with on social media every day of their life. The athlete in my family contacts players at other high schools all the time about "stuff" she hears about their program/coaches/players. They build relationships purely online. Not to mention, parents. You don't think they'd reach out to other parents or the students? C'mon.
Quick search on google/facebook/instagram to find a player or parent.
"Hey, my kid is being recruited my UNCW to play basketaball. I noticed your son requested a transfer. Do you mind if I ask why?" Naw, can't see that happening...

Sure it's a possibility.
We lost ONE recruit to the Coastal. That's clearly evidence our coach who was a proven recruiter thus far has clearly lost that edge too. Time to throw in the towel and just fear the worst.

You took a bigger leap than me, lol. I didn't say anything like that. We are recruiting in tough circumstances. He may be a great recruiter, but the wind is against him with a really bad two year record and 5 players transferring out last year.
Simple question, would YOU do research on a school recruiting you? And when you or your parents discovered 5 players transferred out, would you reach out to them on social media to find out what happened? I absolutley would. And as a parent, I know I would. Any coach would have a hard time recruiting under those circumstances, so this isn't a knock on his ability just stating the facts. I suppose you don't think these facts would have any affect on a decision by a recruit? Not to mention, do you think coaches recruting against UNCW don't bring up our record and transfers? Again, c'mon. It's the reason getting off to a great start is so important.
