RE: Open Thread - 2015 Baseball Season
Big win for ND against #7 FSU last night.

I suspect FSU will win the next two but going into this series I wanted the Irish to steal one, so I am pretty happy with last night's result in the opening game.

Right now, ND is 22-10, 7-9 in the ACC.

Last year, the Irish were 22-32, 9-21 in the ACC.

They matched last year's win total with with 24 games to go ( ND has only played 11 home games to date, so many of the remainder are at home), so I am pretty happy with the improvement in one year.

Former BC coach and Davidson College graduate Mik Aoki is doing a great job as Notre Dame's coach.

This year. I was ready for him to be canned prior to now.

We will have to see if he can keep it up and keep improving the W/L column.

I am a bigger ND baseball fan than basketball, have been for years, so it is gratifying to see them finally show some life 8 years after Paul Mainieri left for LSU.

P.S. I do expect FSU to kick ND's ass the next two games but my optimism will extend beyond this series.

The ACC is a good, competitive baseball league with good facilities (not grandiose ((except for Florida State)), but certainly adequate).
I would imagine that it would be tough to convince a good baseball player to put up with the grey frozen tundra of northern Indiana, but over time your conference affiliation will help ALL of Notre Dame's athletics.

ND has long had pretty good success in all of those sports.

I think that this season is sort of proving to ACC folks that it all was not some Big East mirage.

It is a pretty well run overall sports program.

ND had pretty darn good baseball success for years under Pat Murphy and Paul Mainieri.

I recall a string of a dozen or so straight forty win seasons and regional berths.

In 2002, ND beat FSU in the Super Regionals at FSU to go to the College World Series.

After Paul Mainieri left, ND made a couple of less than stellar coaching hires, and the program suffered.

Like I said, I am not that big of a basketball guy.

I have not seen an NBA game since 1985. I almost never watch non-ND college basketball.

If I was forced to watch Duke play North Carolina, I would pick a baseball game over a basketball one. That is just me, though.

Anyone who needed to have that "proven" to them, wasn't worth the effort. 03-wink

ND
Louisville
UConn

Those were the overall athletics programs that I wanted SU to start emulating. With Dr. Gross we managed to at least become part of the discussion.

Hope his successor and the new chancellor keeps that going while recognizing that the football program needs the most attention and assistance now.

Cheers,
Neil

Duke beats Louisville 2-1 after stranding Cardinal runners at 2nd & 3rd to end the game. That ends a 14 game ACC winning streak for UofL.

Notre Dame beat FSU again today. Even though the Irish are only 8-9 in league their RPI is up to #23 now. Prime contention for NCAA bid.

RE: Open Thread - 2015 Baseball Season
Weekend #6 for conference play:

Sweeps
-#13 Miami over Virginia Tech
-Notre Dame over #9 Florida St

Took 2 of 3:
-#7 Louisville over Duke
-Georgia Tech over #25 Virginia
-North Carolina over NC State
-Clemson over Boston College
-Pittsburgh over Wake Forest

Pretty suprising to see the Irish sweep FSU. That really hurts the Noles' chances for a National Seed and probably puts ND in the field if they were selecting today.

Since UofL took 2 of 3 from Miami to open conference play last month, how have the teams performed against the rest of the ACC? Louisville is 14-1 and Miami is 13-2.

Standings (RPI added)

Atlantic
(7) #7 Louisville 16-2
(9) #9 Florida St 11-7
(95) Wake Forest 9-9
(20) Notre Dame 9-9
(81) Clemson 9-9
(75) NC State 8-9
(88) Boston College 6-11

Coastal
(2) #13 Miami 14-4
(18) North Carolina 9-9
(12) Georgia Tech 9-9
(46) #25 Virginia 7-11
(78) Virginia Tech 7-11
(146) Pittsburgh 6-12
(43) Duke 5-13

The last place team in the ACC has a RPI of 43? Wuhhhhhh? Georgia Tech .500 in conference but 12th in RPI?

I assume Pitt has been playing some high schools and losing with that RPI.

RE: Open Thread - 2015 Baseball Season
ND's RPI is currently at #20.

ND's current strength of schedule is ranked #42 in the country.

The Irish sit ranked #21 in the country in winning percentage at 24-10 (0.7059).

ND is currently 9-9 in the ACC. It has won eight games in a row, six of them ACC games.

(The Irish are doing this with many freshmen and sophomores carrying much of the load, which portends well for the future.)

So, the Irish are sitting pretty good right now for a possible regional bid. The problem is that there are 22 games left in the season.

The trick will be to maintain or better that record going forward.

I am hopeful that ND will be ranked in at least one poll coming out tomorrow.

RE: Open Thread - 2015 Baseball Season
Louisville swept WF this weekend with a double header today due to expected rain tomorrow. The first game today was easy -- 10-1. The second game was low scoring -- but UL led going into the top of the 8th, 4-0. WF scored 2 in the 8th and then got a homer in the 9th that brought in 3 -- to take the lead 5-4. UL got up and immediately got an out. Then a bunt got on -- then a series of walks, steals, and hits, got to bases loaded. A player scored on a wild pitch to tie it. Then bases got loaded again. The player at 3rd stole home play with the pitcher holding the ball ready to pitch. Never even seen anybody try it before. The guy who stole is fantastic at steals -- but still totally crazy. They tried to make the play to put him out and the catcher dropped the ball. Save and the game, at 6-5 with 2 still on and 2 outs. Crazy stuff.

The Cards are now 19-2 in the ACC -- which is like a 5 game lead. Amazing season so far with a fairly young team.

Unlike yesterday, both of these games were on ESPN3 incase someone wants to catch the crazy plays. Thank you ACC and ESPN.
