This is actually a serious question. Do they invest in Canadian maple futures? New Zealand wool stock? Bahamanian salt flat real estate?

Berkeley?

Municipal bonds, corporate bonds, bank CDs, real estate, commodities futures, etc.

Basically, they would have to invest in state/local muni bonds and corporate bonds for safety and maybe beef up exposure to REITs.

And make negligible return, except maybe for REITs, but that was last year. Not really how all this works.

From the article and OP:

Quote:The resolution also called on UC system leaders “to withdraw investments in securities, endowments, mutual funds, and other monetary instruments with holdings” from the governments of Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Sri Lanka and Mexico, as well as the U.S.

Are people assuming the UC students want to withhold ALL investments inside the USA? That's not what they said. They're talking about US gov't securities only - instruments that also provide negligible returns like muni bonds. Plenty of other investment opportunities around within the U.S.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I've heard of this type of thing at some Ivy League schools that stop investing in like tobacco companies, etc for moral reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised... A lot of college educated kids have been implemented into big boy positions at Baker Hughes and the first thing they did was laid off all the experienced people, which included my dad who has been there for 35 years. Some of the others they laid off had 15, 28, and 36 years of service. They laid the entire sales force off. Now THAT was smart.

Maybe not where you're from, but this is the first time I've ever seen it. My dad couldn't be happier though, he got $325K out of the deal and said he's taking a month off and then getting back to work.

I've heard of (and experienced) companies laying off their more expensive employees. Which generally happen to be the most experienced too. The rest of the employees have to pick up the pieces, and the execs get their bonus for reducing costs.

Oh, you're talking about in general... I gotcha. I'm referring to the oilfield. It's a business that you need experience to keep running and usually makes money off of loyalty. Lots of customers followed my dad from AI to BJ to Baker because of the relationships he formed, now they'll most likely go to Baker's competitors, and the old man had a very large customer base.

The Cal Student Government Association has requested ways to invest in ISIS. They finally found a country they feel comfortable investing in.

It sounds like a great learning opportunity.

1. Put university money in less stable investments or ones that have weaker returns.

2. When the universities can't pay their expenses, arrange for tuition hikes and close down the Departments of Multicultural Rainforest Diversity Studies.

3. When they scream for more state funding or taxes on the rich to make up for the cuts, remind them of when they wanted control over investments and that they'd better cough up the extra money if they want to stay in school.

Or just send the morons to another country. Preferably the Middle Least.
