(05-19-2016 09:32 AM)EagleSam Wrote:  This one hurt, but I'm still not that worried. We have 6 of our 7 rotation players returning, as well as two impact transfers to bolster the front court. I'm concerned about our back court for 16-17 since, well, we don't have anyone. But there are still like 500 transfers out there and some good JUCOs. I expect Murphy to go both routes, much to our chagrin.

But at least we have a deep, young front court. That's far less common.

As everyone knows, recruiting NOW is about 16/17 and 17/18.

Recruits like Hawkins, Minnie, etc. are about 2017/18 and beyond.

Lindsey was about about 2016/17.

So the results could be good for both recruiting foci, or for one, but not the other or not for either.

As Sam might be suggesting, ANY MAC-caliber graduate eligible PG could satisfy the need at PG for immediate help WHILE a sitout PG transfer could satisfy the need for 2017/18.

To use the old hackneyed expression: "there are a lot of possible permutations and combinations" to make it work.

There is no magic bullet that I see out there where one recruit comes in and backs up Toney next year and then becomes a starter (and we all live happily thereafter)...

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
This is crazy. I'm looking at verbalcommits.com and their running list of new transfers.

http://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2016

This is a whole new ball game.

E.g., I looked at today's list of transferees. I see two transfers from Maine (same conference that Madray came from). One is a PG who ave. almost 15 ppg and one is a SF who ave. almost 10 ppg.

Yet, there is no way of knowing which schools which players would be interested.

This is NOT what I'm used to seeing 10 or 20 years ago when the pool of available talent in late May was thin. Now players who can play in the MAC are added virtually every day...

I thought Murphy and crew would recruit guys to replace Lee, Toney and Mangum. We have one LOI and lost guys like Alvano, Perry, and others who had experience playing the 2-3 zone and now what do we have?

Lindsay was a big disappointment. Shouldn't have lost him to a lesser program.

We lost Hawkins to a very interesting, underrated school.

Kind of a big fish in a small pond (Ohio Valley Conference).

Their record of making the NCAAs, NIT, etc. is quite impressive. Their head coaches moves up to bigger and better jobs. (see the article below from Wiki).

They have players in the NBA.

For those who like to think, why not go after this one:

Here is some info:

He is a SF who played one season at Stetson before going JUCO. Would be immediately eligible as freshman eligible.

Would seem to be a decent prospect at the mid-major level...

This is one of those "I wonder" type situations...

Tim McCormick's son, Kellen, is done at WMU and eligible to transfer as a grad eligible. Various conferences prohibit within conference transfers. The MAC???

The B1G finally relented and allowed such transfers within conference. Previously the no within transfer conference rule held forth.

A backup for Bond at SF?

I was never really impressed with McCormick, but he'd give us some much needed floor spacing. I don't think he'd come here though. Has Oakland or Detroit written all over him.

Good points.

Tim McCormick is really an Oakland County person.

I believe UDM has given a number of scholarships out recently including one this past week to a Canadian kid.

Oakland U? I don't know their scholarship situation.

Point of clarification:

There are a number of Michael Talleys, father, son, etc.

This would be our Michael Talley's father...

Yes, in fact, Mike Talley (who played at EMU) is now an assistant coach at Wingate University.

Yes, in fact, Mike Talley (who played at EMU) is now an assistant coach at Wingate University.

If there is a recruiting 'angle' it is that Mike is an asst coach at a D-II school (Wingate) in N. Carolina.

He is from the 'coaching tree' of Rob Murphy.

Coaches do much better when they have many former players, assistants, etc. scattered among the high school and college basketball landscape.

The good thing for Talley and Murphy is that they will be recruiting from different pools of recruits, Murphy D-I and Talley D-II.

In time, Talley's knowledge of N. Carolina h.s. hoops and the mid-Atlantic could prove helpful to Murphy for say D-I recruits, D-I transfers, etc.

Based on the Instagram photo, we can say that a Terry Harris is on campus at EMU. There is a Terry Harris transferring from Houston Baptist per the ESPN transfer list.

"Terry Harris, 6-6, G, Soph., Houston Baptist"

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
BTW, think we need a scholarship count post:

Years left on scholarship (since we have sitouts):

One year: Toney, Mangum, and Lee.

Two years: Bond, Madray, and LWH.

Three years: Thompson, Nobles, Minnie, Harris and Steele (think Steele played one year of JUCO). I assume Minnie and Harris will be three to play two.

Unknown: Jones (don't know if he will be a scholarship player).

So I count 11 or 12 scholarships. I can see one more for a PG or say save one in case a transfer comes along or both.

Am I missing anything???
