UDM gets the city kids who want to stay home. Apparently they'd rather go to UDM than Oakland, EMU or others.

UDM has a unique urban environment. Some like it. Some do not.

CMU gets the kids mostly from 'outstate.' WMU does very well in outstate, esp. in the Western part of the state.

We seem to come out 3rd for Detroit area kids to OU, UDM.

HAVING SAID THAT, I really do not care where the recruits come. I think we are doing BETTER by getting kids from outside MI.

Coaches, like Murphy, have extensive contact where they've been and Murphy can go up and down the Atlantic Coast. Plenty of good basketball there.

the only player we have from the east coast is bond we are a Michigan school so we do need to successfully recruit in state I like Thompson there happy recruiting stories like Thompson and mistakes as well in Murphy tenure at emu

Sir, you missed at least one: Mangum (Richmond, Va).

Last year we have Ajayi, who is from N. Carolina.

Previously, Jalen Ross, from N. Carolina.

Because of the number of graduate eligible transfers, JUCOs, etc. it is hard to say where players come. They are kind of 'two location' - their college town and their h.s. town.

Quite frankly, the players can come from anywhere so the best statement about geography: "Geographically Diversity."

Hunter was from New York.
Okologi was from New York.
Madray is from somewhere not far from New York.

And if one can count their college location, Okologi is also from Northern Virginia.

As was reported, Okoloji attending the Syracuse basketball camp as a kid which Murphy worked.

So the seeds of his recruitment happened many years ago in N.Y. state.

That's nice but I wasn't talking about transfers, I was talking about JUCOs and high school kids. The transfers from other schools its a stretch to say Murphy recruited them back in the day. Interesting isn't it than transfers that come from Michigan high school ranks prefer other schools over EMU.

That's wonderful guys but again we need to go outside the state because when it comes to Div I players in Michigan we know where we rank and it isn't high. Although I give Murphy credit for trying.

observation due to inconsistent guard play this year maybe that's why Murphy is looking at Brown and Towns off the Michigan top 20 list.

I don't mean to cherry pick an example, but I was looking at some 2015 recruiting stuff and I ran across Lacey James a h.s. kid we discussed a lot. Here is what he's 'done' (or haven't done) this year at Rider.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...acey-james

Sure everyone loves 'name' high school seniors, but most don't set the world on fire as frosh.

I don' t think we need him for 2016-2017 so I'm wondering out loud if he is a qualifier and would be able to "redshirt" the 2016-2017 season.

I can do some searching...

EDIT: Did the research. He played as a frosh. That would not, however, prevent him from having 3 years to play 2.

http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2014-...iew=lineup

But I wouldn't be surprised if he'd back up Thompson while Madray and LWH man the '4'.

I would assume the staff would point out the pluses to backing up and learning from JT4. He'd learn from the best pure big man in the MAC.

Despite the complaining about inconsistent shooting in the back court I'm not sure we go for another guard unless a guard leaves or is other unavailable.

I really think Murphy plans too win 'big' over the next two years. As long as he has players like JT4, Madray, LWH, Bond, etc. up front, he can find the guards...

Hopefully he has two more years of those guys...

This seems like 'old news' but Khadim Dieng, C, WMU, is transferring.

He is stuck 'behind' two other centers who are either a soph or frosh.

If I remember his recruiting correctly, his American family lives in or near Grand Rapids.

I don't know if he sees himself as a D-I player stuck in an unfavorable spot or if he would consider moving down to GLIAC and stay on the west side.

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
For those interested, here are the mid-year transfers from verbalcommits.com

We do NOT have a scholarship to give so if a player would be interested in EMU, they'd have to pay their own way this semester (PLUS, I don't think a player could be on scholarship at two schools within the same academic year. That would be a good question to ask a college basketball coach or AD).

Jermaine Lawrence from Manhattan is a very interesting case. Very high recruit. Minor issue at Manhattan (supposedly was to be drug tested and didn't take it because of an issue and was suspended and left the program). Murphy might know him from his days at Syracuse. I wouldn't be surprised if Murphy knew him as a 10th grader in NYC.

To paraphrase Hoopster: "You can't have enough (fill in the blank)." In this case big men. One EMU coach told me many years ago (Think someone from Braun's staff) that wing players are easy to find. Big men and point guards are harder to find. Concentrate recruiting them.

Didn't he get busted with Justin Moss for stealing from a dorm room? Surprised that Moss was kicked out of school but Diane wasn't.

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
Why recruiting MI is getting so tough for the mid-majors:

"TJ Kelley ‏@scoopIPS 2h2 hours ago
Georgia stopped by the Motor City Roundball Classic and offered Detroit Cornerstone 2017 sf Jamal Cain this evening."

So Georgia who swooped up Yante Maten and Mike Edwards is looking at 2017 prospects in MI. Cain is the type of prospect teams from MI should want to keep home. Although seriously, Cain would probably go B1G or equivalent, not mid-major:

http://s180024.instanturl.net/bankhoopsn...-rankings/

Recruiting is truly national. OTOH, we have high school recruits from Baltimore, New Orleans, and Los Angeles.

I agree that EMU needs to make the NCAAs for us to get some acclaim.

As many of us 'old timers' remember, it has been almost 18 years (1998) the last time EMU has been to the Big Dance.

That's a long time for one school with a pretty good history in hoops.
