Memphis can hire a BIG NAME coach from another school?
Here is a list of the current Top 25, who has been able to hire a big name coach from another school? Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, and Arkansas (hired former Asst Coach) -- Indiana also hired a proven coach from another school. It is VERY RARE in today's basketball for a school outside the top 7 or 8 schools to hire a proven coach.
We can get an up and comer and we can get an out of work coach, and they should be able to win here. If Rudd and the boosters (you know the guys you guys are asking to pay JP over $7,000,000 to not coach) decides to move on we can get a great coach, just not anybody you are familiar with today. Who has ever heard of Fuente before he was hired?
1 Kentucky (31) 13-0 799
2 Duke (1) 13-0 768
3 Virginia 13-0 727
4 Wisconsin 14-1 703
5 Louisville 13-1 649
6 Arizona 13-1 634
7 Gonzaga 14-1 628
8 Villanova 13-1 546
9 Maryland 14-1 497
10 Texas 12-2 478
11 Utah 12-2 470
12 Notre Dame 14-1 441
13 Kansas 11-2 420
14 West Virginia 13-1 381
15 Wichita St 12-2 320
16 Iowa State 10-2 317
17 North Carolina 11-3 297
18 Oklahoma 10-3 279
19 Seton Hall 12-2 172
20 Ohio State 12-3 142
21 Virginia Commonwealth 11-3 135
22 Baylor 11-2 105
23 Northern Iowa 12-2 60
24 St. John's 11-3 55
25 Arkansas 11-2 50

Quit moving the bar. It's not unanimous that we have to hire a big name/wow coach.
We just need to hire a good coach at this point.

Honestly I would be open to just about anyone with decent experience.
Sure I would love to get Pearl, but at this point just give me someone who isn't a complete clown.

nevermind a homerun, but if we aren't going for at least a triple, we might as well keep Josh.

I don't agree with this. JP has proven to be stubborn, unrelatable and most recently completely insane.
He has lost the fanbase. It is time for a change.

I'm not moving the bar, I am bringing FACTS to the table, post like this one prove that it is relevant, we are NOT going to get a home run or triple hire by hiring a coach currently employed. We are going to hire an up and comer or an unemployed coach --- either one will work here and we will be more successful than Josh and most likely less successful than the last 4 years or Calipari.

Kevin Willard has Seton Hall headed in the right direction. Plus he looks like Andy Kennedy. That would be fun to see when we play Ole Miss.

If we were to hire one of them away we would be the first outside totally disgruntled coaches and the truly elite programs (KY, KU, UCLA, Ind,UNC, AZ) to hire a coach from a good program in a long time.
NC State had to hire Godfrey..
Cincy Hired an assistant
in 2014 2 schools hired coaches from major programs:
Va Tech and U-Cal Berkley --both hired disgruntled coaches, everyone else hired mid major head coaches, out of work coaches, or asst coaches.
In 2013 UCLA was the only program to hire away a current successful coach from a 'major' program.
Minnesota hired an assistant, Texas Tech hired an out of work coach
You could go back ever year and what you will see is that one coaches get paid $2,000,000 they don't move unless they get their dream job or they are pissed off alot.

I remember the last train wreck that we called a coaching search. Nobody reputable was interested. I have a tendency to lean toward Ned's way of thinking. I don't see a wow hire (if we are looking to hire) in our future. I only see a "What?" hire.
This post is the only thing that is keeping me from the abyss. You had better not be playing with my emotions, Smokey.

No one wanted to follow Cal. For the millionth time. Plus RC was in charge.
He had just come off a historic four year run and had WWW delivering top level recruits.
Every coach in the world knew that not only could they not match the historic run, but they wouldn't have the players to even try.
Now, the program is back to the top 30-40 level overall = less expectations.
Great pay scale, great recruiting base, NBA city/arena, and soon to be brand new state of the art practice facility.
Better conference and better TV exposure as well.
No brainer - line will be around the block. Twice.

You are being naive if you think that is the only or main reason no one was interested. There were many reasons. Most are still applicable.
