No offense meant, but your team had real talent again this year. From an outsider's perspective, it was the guys in golf shirts that held that team back, not the guys in pads.

Our Achilles heel - red zone run game. If we had one, we run out the clock on UCF, long drive on Cinci for W, and we don't fumble on the 1 or botch two 4th down conversions against UF. Riley is still learning, margin of loses getting closer (no pastings by a Navy or even a UNC). Once the team hits equilibrium, ECU will be very dangerous.

Looks like we just opened up some more scholarships for this year. Any idea on who we will pick up?

One 3* Secondary guy is enrolled early. There is another, but I don't know if he's going to make it. We just offered a JUCO safety as well. Good looking JUCO OL and DT are possibilities too. Whoever the QB is will be surrounded by a solid team.

Hearing we are losing/lost someone on defense today. Not sure if transfer, flunk or kicked off.

Justin Sandifer is the Juco Olineman we are after. Competing w Lousiville for him.
Darius Commissiong is the JUCO DLineman. Believe we have inside track.

Fingers crossed we sign multiple Juco secondary players. After success of Coop and lineman this year I'm good with bringing them in.

THAT is the easiest way to describe next season. I am very excited to see Brunson/Overton/Bigger trio at LB. That's as good a trio of LB's at one time that I can ever remember with ECU. I expect their speed (Brunson and Overton) will help with the pass rush in the blitz packages.

But back to QB, a senior Offensive Line is a godsend for a new QB. As is a bunch of talent at RB. And we know we have guys who can catch the ball. I expect Riley to start the playbook slowly and build into the intermediate and deep throws once teams show if they can stop the run and short passes. This should help Benkert of whoever with finding a rythm without making critical errors. Carden had a long leash and made some critical errors because of it. They trusted his decision making more than they will a new QB, who they will want to run the play called.

As good as Carden was...there can still be a better QB than Carden at ECU...Carden started and finished his career at ECU with Interceptions, made costly mistakes in close games that resulted in losses. He was a great kid, smart, and was very likable...but ECU can get better at QB down the road.

I expect us to run the ball more next season until Benkert gets his legs under him. We will have the RBs and the O line to do it next year. Bigger will anchor the D and provide the leadership. I see a similar season again in 15. Maybe better.

In case you hadn't found out yet it was a Freshmen D-Line who redshirted. Pretty sure the school dismissed him. IIRC he was always going to be a project.

Not so sure about putting UCF in the loss column. I'd probably add a column below it for Questionables and add UCF in there. Otherwise, I agree with the list.

Really 8 of those games could be considered questionables

I'm thinking:

Wins
Towson
USF
Tulsa
UCONN
SMU

Losses
Cncy
BYU - they may be the best team we play (injured stud QB coming back)
FLA

Either Way
VT
Navy
UCF
Temple

If we go in house with coach Dave, who would you want to be qb coach?

Wow Ruff didn't waste much time. I really like the two hires and he was true to his word sticking to the scheme

Crandell, if hired as QB coach wouldn't need to know the system. He would be coaching the QB his position, not the offense. After the ball is snapped passing is the same no matter the system, reading a D is the same, reading coverages, blitz, stunts, etc.

Rick Smith hadn't run a 3-4 before Ruff hired him, he had to learn the system. We've done fine and he is the DC.

Crandell was a hell of QB that should have got a shot in the NFL, but did very well in the CFL and is now a QB coach in the CFL.

RE: ECU football 2015
I disagree that Crandell wouldnt have to know the system...the QB's in that system have certain reads, certain methods of getting their passes off...have you ever seen the QB training that LR used to do...all the QB's throwing at the exact same time.

Harrell seems like he may be worth a shot if Nichol gets the job. Was at TT for 4 years with Ruff and Nichol, then played pro ball for 4 years, then spent last year working with Leach at Washington State...plus he has name recognition that would help on the recruiting trail, certainly at the least with the QB position.

That's interesting that they listed Crandell as being from Charlotte...he is actually from Robersonville...just down the road from ECU. Robersonville's closest neighboring town is Parmele, which is where the band Parmalee is from.
