CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Shane Lyons, the deputy athletic director at the University of Alabama, has been named the next athletic director at West Virginia University. The announcement was made by WVU president E. Gordon Gee on Monday morning - See more at: http://www.charlestondailymail.com/artic...4lhiU.dpuf

Yup. He's been here about a year now... Previous president went to Clemson.

I wouldn't read too much into this hire. They really wanted a WVU native and alumni. The top of the list was Rob Mullens, the AD at Oregon... Let's see...you're school is playing for the CFP Championship, you've got the Nike guy who writes blank checks any time you ask, and you're not only a FB power but also the top school in Track and Field among others... Are you going to leave all that to go all "Silence of the Lambs" to go to WVU... Yeah, no.

If anything, what has people in WV talking about this hire is that he spent time at the ACC...at the very point the ACC shafted WVU twice. People here want him to answer the obvious question: why is WVU not in the ACC right now?

Wonder if Shane wore a blue and gold tie, or coonskin for the presser?

I don't care what the man wears as long as he is an advocate on UC getting into the B12.

My understanding is that Gee is in UC's corner for the B12, and that's who this guy gets his marching orders from.

I am glad to hear this, but out of curiosity, how do you know? The words that led to his dismissal at Ohio State about UC were less than complimentary.

This is his 2nd time at WVU, he did 2 stints at Ohio University at Cowonbus OH, one time at Vandy and one at Brown.

RE: W Virginia - new AD
I too have heard that Gee is supportive of UC at this point but I have no authoritative source for that. My feeling is we'll take all the support and positive comment we can muster.

His remarks about UC while @ OSU were certainly less than favorable. I attribute that more to his role there and what I perceive to be the OSU institutional mantra: maintain a sense of institutional superiority by subtle denigration of all other Ohio public universities. So if UC is rising, throw them an anchor instead of a life vest.

It's worked pretty well for them to date; they've preserved their status as the only P5 in the country's seventh most populous state. They don't want anyone else in their sandbox.

Looks like President Ono is trying to lean as far away from Gee as possible.

Gee is a pretty good University President... so long as he doesn't say anything. It's when he opens his mouth that people get really squeamish. #cringeworthy

RE: W Virginia - new AD
Gee is actually pretty funny..... He said that Ohio State didn't play
the "Little Sisters of the Poor".. Then, the Little Sisters complained
and Gee apologized and sent them a check.. He then compared running Ohio State to commanding the Polish Army.. Polish people
complained, he apologized and sent them a check.. Then he said the
Fathers at Notre Dane may be holly on Sunday, but they are holly hell during the week.. He got in trouble when he said "Those Catholics just
can't be trusted"...

True story:
WVU had a series of fraternity/sorority incidents this fall, culminating in the alcohol related death of an 18 year old fraternity pledge. So they interview Gee on the local radio station. "Terrible, terrible..." says Gee. "So what's the solution?" asks the host. Says Gee, "They need to reduce the drinking age to 18."

Wha???

Believe it or not, the kind of binge drinking that leads to those sorts of incidents often increases when you ban alcohol. See Prohibition.

I work for a Swiss owned company, and a few of my co-workers are Swiss (16 years to drink, 18 to drive) and I've heard the incident rate of these types of events are much lower as a result... Less "forbidden fruit", more part of the culture.

Gee says what's on his mind without holding back as much as most of peers. There are good parts and bad parts to that, but sometimes it is a bit refreshing at least.
