WVU had a series of fraternity/sorority incidents this fall, culminating in the alcohol related death of an 18 year old fraternity pledge. So they interview Gee on the local radio station. "Terrible, terrible..." says Gee. "So what's the solution?" asks the host. Says Gee, "They need to reduce the drinking age to 18."

Wha???

Believe it or not, the kind of binge drinking that leads to those sorts of incidents often increases when you ban alcohol. See Prohibition.

I work for a Swiss owned company, and a few of my co-workers are Swiss (16 years to drink, 18 to drive) and I've heard the incident rate of these types of events are much lower as a result... Less "forbidden fruit", more part of the culture.

That was my impression too, and figured that is what Gee meant in the quote from Jerry.

The OBVIOUS ANSWER is their, by and large, abusive behavior towards Maryland, VT and Pitt fans. There seems to be a pretty good reason why VT and Pitt aren't playing them anymore, and it's more than conference-related.

I must have been lucky. I went to 3 games at WVU and was treated OK. We were told on the bus that by fans that if we wanted to leave early when down by 20 we would have to walk it was joking. Now at a Ohio University at Cowonbus OH we were called every name in the book and my wife refuses to return.

So is Lyons scheduled to have a few teeth pulled so he fits in better?

My understanding is it goes back much farther than that. There is still a lot of pent up cultural/socio-economic/political issues that goes back centuries between the states of West Virginia v. Virginia/North Carolina.

WVU's academic standing has also long been an issue for them. They are pretty much mandated by West Virignia law to accept any resident who applies to the school (their admissions rate is 99%). This is a big deal for schools like Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and Wake which see themselves on the same level as Ivy League schools.

And yes, the WVU fan behavior has long been an issue.

My point is, if you want to speak about how to "reduce" the epidemic of underage and/or binge drinking, that's one thing. That's not what he said.

Plus, when you are at the tragic end of a series of embarrassing events, you don't throw out something like this.

But, whatever.

All of these things are true. And the WVU fan-base is in various states of denial about them.

I'm just saying what the prominent question on WVU fans regarding Lyons' background is. Few out here are saying "Oh! An SEC connection!" (It has been noted, but that's not the "burning" thing...) Most out here are saying "Hey, he was the associate commissioner of the ACC when they passed on WVU..."
