RE: OT - City of Oregon, Ohio to change it's name
well - the final word is that Oregon, Ohio will make a change in it's City slogan for the week leading up to the Championship Game: The official slogan for Oregon, Ohio is - Oregon on the Bay, City of Opportunity

The city of Oregon, Ohio, has a new temporary name, making it clear where its allegiance lies heading into the biggest college football game of the season.

Following a petition from two citizens, Mayor Michael Seferian issued a proclamation that his city will be known as "Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters" starting Monday and lasting through next week's College Football Playoff National Championship presented by AT&T.

"Whereas, the City of Oregon officially adopted its name in 1838 as Oregon Township which happens to be 21 years before the State of Oregon received its statehood in 1859," the proclamation said. "And The City of Oregon has been petitioned by residents of the city to make it clear that we are not associated with Oregon University Ducks Football."

But two locals, Matt Squibb and Mark Rabbitt, put together a change.org petition calling for Oregon to change its name and for Oregon's Clay High School to change its school colors from green and gold for that day, according to the Toledo Free Press.

"I grew up in Oregon, Ohio and love the city, but for the day of the 'Big Game' I am asking the city council to make a proclamation to change the name of the city for one day," reads the petition. "Call it Buckeye Town, Ohio City, Brutusville, whatever, you get the point. Let's not leave anything to chance here! Change the name and support the Buckeyes!"

The 1,000 supporters who quickly signed off on the petition got their wish Monday. And while it might be quite a mouthful, for the next week there will be no doubt who has the support of folks in Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters.

I am baffled at how any Toledo fan could think a town 11 miles from the Glass Bowl declaring its allegiance to that school in Columbus is in any way a good thing. State pride?!?!?!? @$%^ THAT NOISE. That team in Columbus is just one of 8 FBS teams and is "representing the state of Ohio" in a national championship game that the other 7 aren't allowed to play in even if they have an undefeated season.

y'all should be rounding up a posse to go egg that mayor's house.

RE: OT - City of Oregon, Ohio to change it's name
I think a difference between distancing from one team and claiming allegiance to another or claiming state pride versus school pride.

Whole lot of potential fun taken away by some reading a whole lot more into this than I do. I thought simpler was just to rename themselves "Ohio City" or "THE Oregon" for the day and change the school colors as an excuse to have a party, not get all hung up in overthink. Way too many egos got involved after the initial idea was floated.

As far as I'm concerned, as we did to Mobile they ARE a state school taking state pride into this game just as Oregon is taking in California pride, lol.

RE: OT - City of Oregon, Ohio to change it's name
The current Mayor and former Mayor of Toledo (both UT graduates) attended our game in Mobile along with a lot of other well known folks including Chuck and Jackie Sullivan. They can change their name all they want but those four people alone at our game and their relationship with UT will go much farther when UT needs things done or help compared to this PR stunt.

I'm a little confused here, are you joking? We played Arkansas ST which is a state school, in Mobile Alabama, a totally different state. Also Oregon is a state separate from California, what California pride is Oregon taking???
