RE: About time...Letter from NAS
I just sent an email to the NAS, also copying the faculty senate, requesting the following:
1. The UAB NAS ensure that all members of the UAB NAS have been sent this email. As a lifetime alumni member, I have not been sent this email to date.
2. The UAB NAS provide for a Webex, conference bridge or other remote attendance option for out-of-state members that are not able to attend in person.
3. The UAB NAS to mobilize our alumni, students and community leaders to support a no-confidence vote in the leadership of President Watts, have our disbanded programs reinstated and make it known that the undergraduate side of campus, along with the student experience, will always be supported and defended. If you do this, I will again stand with you. Until that time, I cannot support your efforts to support the current administration and will direct my donations to other causes.
4. A response to this email with an answer to my requests above. I believe that is only fair due to the number of requests the NAS has made for donations over the years, particularly in 2014 with the Campaign for UAB

I am sure they are tired of hearing from me, but I sent it anyway.

I agree with these requests Hack, there's a lot of free remote meeting options out there that they can use to make sure everyone that wants to participate can. A NAS by definition has numerous out of town members.

This meeting will take place a couple of days before the faculty senate meeting for the vote on no confidence. It's a chance to show the faculty, rayray, the bot and the public how the alumni really feel about what has happened and negate the weak previous NAS statement.

Understand that the NAS did not want the meeting, but the 4 agenda items are spot on! Now sounds like the NAS wants this (finally listening to the alums). Those are bold statements and glad to see them.

I see what you are saying, but the agenda items was verbatim written by an activist member and backed by 50 of us triggering the bylaws requirement for a meeting to discuss the 4 items.

By the way, isn't the February UA-BOT meeting supposed to be at the UAB NAS house?

Yes.

Yes, the UABOT meeting, or the Bryant Bank Conference, is supposed to be here in February, unless they chicken out and hold it somewhere else.

I joined (re-joined after 8 or so years) just so I could be a signatory on the request and am working on rearranging my work schedule that day to be there in person. Yes, the join fee is giving $$ to the NAS, but it buys you a voice and they do fund scholarships.

The NAS is an arm of UaB & under control of Porky Ray's office. I wouldn't expect a whole lot.

Technically so is the faculty & yet...

Not saying they'll do anything but they were forced to do something instead of stand on the sidelines & do nothing

With 50 votes there I would think the real blazers will out vote the ray blazers by a long shot.

Dear Members of the UAB National Alumni Society,

Please allow this email to serve as official notice to all UAB National Alumni Society active members that a special meeting has been called by the active membership to discuss the following agenda items:

1. The creation of a more definitive statement by the UAB NAS that clearly states that the eliminated programs MUST be re-instated.
2. The lack of inclusion of all stakeholders by Dr. Ray Watts in the process used to eliminate said programs must be addressed and a process established going forward to prevent the breakdown of self-governance from occurring in the future.
3. The creation of a resolution calling for a meeting to bring UAB Administration (President), athletic department leadership, coaches from the football, rifle and bowling teams, alumni and students, City of Birmingham officials, Jefferson County Commission members, Jefferson and Shelby County legislators, and select business leaders from the community to the table to determine how to re-instate and invest in these programs going forward.
4. Address the vote of No Confidence to be taken by the UAB Faculty Senate on January 15th, 2015.

This meeting will take place on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. The official location of the meeting is still to be determined and we will get you this information as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

James W. (Wes) Smith

President

As anyone else received this email? I hope I am not the only one that received this? We need a huge turn out!

I haven't received this email from the NAS. It was forwarded to me and I sent it to them requesting my four items listed earlier, which includes ensuring that all members are sent the email.

RE: About time...Letter from NAS
I've gotten confirmation from multiple friends that are active alumni (lifetime) that have not received the email. If this meeting has been forced by the membership, we need to ensure the email goes out to all members and they utilize the technology available to allow remote participation access for alumni.
