even more reason to go to 8 (or better yet, 16).....

I think he means a +1 with a wide-open field instead of one with semifinals, and I think that's a good idea.
Exactly. I would prefer going back to the old bowl \ conference affiliations and the a plus one.
Honestly, I'm not sure that'd appease anyone. You'll find fans that will claim their team didn't get the fair shake. I mean today we're saying TCU, but how do you give everyone a fair shake? You can't.
Eventually this playoff system will evolve. Especially if this proves to be lucrative to many sponsors, Bowl CEOs, the NCAA, colleges, etc.
I still think the way to go is to ensure all Conferences are represented, not just the P-5. I mean look at the NFL, they don't exclude a division if they're weak, I mean look at the NFC South for heaven's sake.
Do I think TCU got a fair shake? Yes they played in one of the 6 NY's Bowls. After watching them tear Ole Miss a new one, should they'd been in the Semi finals? Probably so.. It'd been more fun to watch them and Oregon perhaps.. But hindsight is always 20/20.
As long as we have a panel of people picking which teams are ranked, there'll be flaws.
In an 8-team playoff, if you don't win your conference you have no room to complain. If you don't win your conference, you know up front that you're "at risk". And that's the way it should be.
Right now, with a 4-team playoff, a P5 team can win their conference and still be left out. That ain't right. That's a big difference.
even more reason to go to 16....

RE: If the playoff was simply a plus one
I think it's a question of priority. Most people involved with this stuff seem to think that the most important thing is that we have a single, undisputed, 100% fair determination of #1. These people look at the BYU championship, the GA Tech / Washington split championship, etc. as grave miscarriages of justice that must be addressed.
Personally, I love college football, but I don't give a flip if, say, LSU and USC end up sharing the final #1 spot. They'll be OK. And even if the hand of God could reach down and give all the trophies to the real best team (whatever that means), the outcome would still piss off 50% of the people involved.
I'm not a habitual ESPN basher, but it did seem like people were more reasonable about these things 20-30 years ago. There's a whole lot of unnecessary manufactured drama associated with all of this.

hence, the "entertainment sports" portion of the acronym that has its grip around zee throat of the viewing populus....
edit: money is the only reason playoff expansion happens....a g5 spot is still in doubt in my mind....if that happens (noninclusive).....I'm out.....it's a complete game changer.....I'm alread out viewing the p5 as it currently exists outside of spot checks b/c I'm in a bowl pool....I dumped it all year and won't hesitate moving forward....

Yup. And the other part I didn't mention is that the powers-that-be want rich alumni to travel to these games. Time was, the locals went to the bowl games in their own cities because they were off work and ticket prices hadn't gotten astronomical.
I miss those days. It was more about the game and less about the money, and the change I described has been engineered by people who saw CFB as a way to get rich and little else. Wish those folks had just started a bank or another stupid software company or something.

Yup. Instead of everybody debating who the champion is, now they're debating who did and didn't even get the chance to play for it. It's a rather odd definition of progress.
I also never understood why 2 teams out of 100+ both getting rings, banners, and trophies was some untenable horror. The possibility of it was just one more thing that made major college football different from everything else.
What I find absolutely hilarious is how the credo of the BCS all those years was "Every Game Counts," and the supposed beauty of that system was how there was no room for error each week. Now, we have this 4-team playoff, and the supposed beauty of this system is that teams can still earn their way back into the title picture even if they slip up along the way. Make up your damned minds.

My brother's in-laws are big Bama fans and they actually declined to make a deposit on championship game tickets several weeks ago because according to them tickets started in the $400 range for nose bleed seats. If that's the case I imagine lower level seats are easily going for $1,000 minimum. With those prices I feel like they are overpricing many of your fans. On the flip side, there will be people who won't go to games and save up on the chance of getting one or more championship tickets
Read "Death to the BCS".. Same rules are still applying.. Nothing's changed except we have a semi final playoff.

RE: If the playoff was simply a plus one
If they did go to a 16 game format it would add a lot of games to the schedule. There has to be some sort of agreeable number that wouldn't interfere with the "Dance" (I'm being facetious). A 16 team championship would add 4 more games to the schedule. Unfortunately, those of us who would be looking through the mall windows outside would only play less games for nothing. Umm, what can be done? And........you know we'd wouldn't even be considered for the nat'l championship.
