RE: MEAC to pull out of FCS playoffs to compete in ESPN-funded bowl game
From an article about the MEAC in The Richmond Times Dispatch on Friday, January 9th.
"The possibility of the MEAC and SWAC champions meeting in a postseason game is unlikely to influence CAA Football members to explore a similar arrangement with another league, according to Scott Meyer, an associate commissioner of the CAA."
Has anyone heard this before?

Can you have an HBCU bowl game if there are no HBCUs left?

Looks like SC State (typically one of the top HBCU football teams) is facing being shut down "temporarily" by the state. When was the last time a college has been closed for an extended amount of time and then successfully re-opened?

Answer: Never (at least not in modern history).
It's just a subcommittee report, and I would be very surprised if the action is adopted and signed into law. That said, the legislature's action has only exacerbated a very difficult financial problem.

SC State has had financial issues for years. Like NSU, they can't even get financials completed due to the graft/incompetence. There are accusations of outright stealing and money grab in the SC State admin. They are likely to lose accredited status, which is the end anyway.
HBCU's serve a diminished purpose these days. Large/urban universities have large minority bases now, and opportunities now exist that make HBCU's largely irrelevant.
And, to be frank, aside from a very select group, the education provided at HBCU's has really really declined.

It would cost the tax payers a fortune to let a college fail and be shut down not to mention the personal cost to the faculty, staff, and students. Someone down there needs to take the bull by the horns and through reductions come up with a viable plan to remain solvent.
Look at the investment the state of Virginia has made at Virginia State. It makes no sense to let those buildings become vacant while building other expensive buildings elsewhere on other campuses.

Could cost the taxpayers more in the long run to keep pissing $$ down a black hole. And couldn't they come up with another use for the buildings?

Obviously you have no idea of the investment the state has made in the university, the impact on the economy of the region or the political fallout. All of this is political nonsense .

In all fairness to BDK, he did use the word "could" and then followed with a question looking for answers. He clearly demonstrated that he wants to be informed rather than giving a mandate on what he thinks the state should do.
Something that always disturbs me is the use of the word "give". Way too often I personally translate that as "I am entitled". I see little evidence of what the taxpayers of SC are going to receive in return for future support.
If the leaders, such as this Rev. Darby and Mr. Green, would speak in terms of what the state's support will do for the people of SC rather than having those who pay the taxes feel they are simply burning good money, gathering real support will come with less resistance.

I would think the school stays open, but I think this threat sets up some points to negotiate with. If members of the state want to cut costs, I would think athletics would be among the 1st to be hit. If they are allowed to keep an athletic program, I would see them having to drop down to D2 or D3 to lower costs. If the school is truly in danger of losing accreditation, all focus would have to be on finances and academics.
