You can really tell the value of some of our conference mates degrees in this thread. Half of them can't play by the rules. No P5 schools. Either way this thread has gone to crap.

RE: Who are your football Peers?
For Marshall (trying to make this an east of the Mississippi league):
Ohio U
Toledo
Miami (Ohio)
ECU
Cincinnati
Memphis
Southern Miss
UCF
MTSU
NIU
These ten plus Marshall and any team from the following list would be my ideal 12team non-P5 league.
Emerging as peers: WKU, ODU, Ga. Southern, and Appy State.
Other possibilities: Akron, Bowling Green, South Alabama, and Troy State.
(If P5 teams were allowed I'd add in order: Louisville, Kentucky, WVU, VT, Pitt, and Vanderbilt)

SMU
Rice
Houston
UNT
USM
Memphis
Tulane
UTEP
UTSA
Tulsa
Just wondering. Based on what criteria do you consider UNT a peer of LaTech?

So you just forgot MT beat you in Football at our place in 2013, and came in second in the East THIS YEAR?!@# Merry Christmas to you too. And by the way you are dreaming if you think Kansas State is Marshall's peer in Football. Marshall has been very good but not that good!

RE: Who are your football Peers?
The key word here is peers. This means schools of a like profile academically, financially, demographically, geographically, etc.
With the above in mind, the peers of Southern Miss are below.
In a pure sense, we fit only those who have no market, no budget, and no real hope of moving "up."
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana
Troy
Arkansas State
Middle Tennessee
South Alabama (although USA is urban)
I would be ok with this as the basis of a tightly-knit regional conference partnered with another group of tightly-knit schools geographically, but I would like few or no cross-over games.
In the current situation, I think geography and institutional similarity is extremely important. In order to be entertaining at this level of college football, I think that traveling fans, bands, and cheerleaders are important. The chance of running into alumni on a regular basis stokes rivalries. Rivalry and pageantry are what we have all been missing out on by shunning our regional peers.

I wouldn't say Troy is an academic peer, not sure their doctoral programs line up with the rest of that list.
but as far as football goes, I got news for all y'all, you're in the G5, you're a football peer.

I would love to claim USA as a peer, but you guys have us beat in population and upside. USA has a slight chance to move beyond CUSA for those reasons. The rest of us will be peers forever. My post was no slight to USA.

RE: Who are your football Peers?
oh no I didn't take it as such, I definitely took your post in a positive light.
I consider USM a total peer in every sense of the word; our institutions are more similar than some would like to admit.
I meant the premise of this thread is a little silly if it's just focusing on football, because right now G5 football is extremely similar. The only team I'd put on an island is Boise

I harken back to the Hayden Frye days. UNT has a good football tradition and with the exception of UNT having more of a commuter tradition in a large city as opposed to Tech's rural traditional campus, they have similar values.

The premise of this thread is to gauge who a fan would pick on their team if we all lined up at the end of the gym for kick ball. It's just for conversation sake.
