Why doesn't the Big 12 go all out and become the Big 16?
Why not strike some fear in the hearts of the SEC and others? All these opinions about who they would take, so why not take them all? Hear me out before you make too much fun.
Take the following:
Memphis (Good market and right the middle of Vandy, Miss, and MSU. Plus we are just great all around guys).
Tulane (Give LSU some TV competition and New Orleans would be a great place for the middle America teams to travel to)
Cincinnati (Another good market in Ky and Loserville's back yard. Also, gives WVA a close rival and keeps us an old basketball enemy).
Houston would be a great market, but does the Big 12 need another Texas team?
UCF has built a nice program, but they seem to be too far away, so....
Who are the other 3 teams?
BYU, Boise State, and Notre Dame. These three are out of SEC country, but it makes the Big 12 THE national brand if they were added. Now I know some of you always say there is no way these three are joining any league, but why won't they? I am asking for an actual answer to this question.
You have to admit this would be fun. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Notre Dame could join the Big 10 or ACC at anytime, I find it highly unlikely they would chose the Big 12 over those two.

This may sound stupid, but if there were an expansion to 16 I'd take Memphis, Cincy, Arkansas St & Georgia St. Those last two would extend your footprint into the sec market. Also, those are two programs that I believe would skyrocket if in a power league. Much like FSU did with the ACC. It's something new, & not the same old group of teams that have failed to be successful.

The Big 12 would have better options than some of the listed teams. BYU and Boise are good choices. Colorado St. and New Mexico would be a good fit. Memphis and Cincy could be good, but more for us than them. If they wanted to be bold they could make a power play for Arkansas and Mizzou. Both those schools still grumble a little that they don't fit well in the SEC. Also, I know some Nebraska fans do not like the Big 10.

Arky and Mizzou may grumble but they love that SEC check. don't think they are leaving anytime soon unless for some odd reason that check gets smaller which will probably never happen

BYU is a slightly better choice than the others, but not head and shoulders better. They have a large tv footprint, but the travel distance is bad and expensive. And unless BYU is willing to play games 7 days a week, it's going to be a problem.
Boise st is shxt for the b12. Horrendous travel, no tv market.
Colorado st and New Mexico are just like Boise.
The b12 has sort of signaled that they need to tie geography to wvu into the mix. And all major conferences are preparing for the day when their tv package has to stand on its own and sell itself to the masses. The teams that will be selected must have the ability to attract a tv market.

Notre dame hasn't needed to join a league as long as it has had a sole TV deal which it doesn't have to split with anyone. If there's no more deal with NBC, and if Nd gets no special consideration for playoff consideration, that might make them reconsider... the Big Ten where their traditional rivalries and target markets have been...
get a broadcaster and sponsors to guarantee better annual returns from TV rev distribution for each of the existing 10 teams than whatever they get now...

Did you just compare Arkansas State to pre-ACC FSU?

fun?
you must be bad at math..
$250,000,000/10 is much better than $250,000,000/16. for existing members.

Really?
Arkansas State and Georgia State in the Big XVI?
REALLY? Not Houston or UCF or ECU or even outlier Connecticut....but those two?
Damn, that is just laughable. Why not go whole hog intruding into the SEC footprint and invite Troy State and Coastal Carolina as well. Good Lord, I fully realize opinions are encouraged here, but make a reasonable attempt to stay within the boundaries of common sense.
