RE: Sun Belt Bowl Selection Rules
Or we need to accept the fact some teams didn't play well enough to get into a bowl. TXST has a bit of an argument... but we're not the SEC here. There are few G5 teams that "deserve" a bowl game at 6-6 or even 7-5.

And yes, I'll whine just as much as everyone else when GS doesn't get invited at 6-6. :)

Or maybe I should just accept the fact that we are in an age where college football rewards mediocrity because it means certain people make more money.

RE: Sun Belt Bowl Selection Rules
I think some fans here are placing a lot of undue expectations to the conference. Should we have a 7-5 rule? Yes, but the bowls don't want it, and while we could surely try and force them to accept it, but if they leave for another league, we're left with little opportunity to replace them.

CUSA has this capability because most of their bowls are either brand new, or exist in areas where few leagues want to sign up. They have no choice but to go along with it because they don't have the clout that the 13 year old New Orleans Bowl and 17 year old Go Daddy Bowl do, or because they cant afford to lose CUSA.

CUSA actually tried to force regulations on the Go Daddy years ago. They left the league soon after and ended up with the Sun Belt,

Chiefsfan,

I always appreciate your perspective. You have to remember that us and App for sure and maybe some other members who are fresh from the FSC come from a place where being selected for a playoff spot has alot to do with record. In that world in an 11 game season if you went 8-3 in the SoCon (and some years 7-4) you were pretty much assured on making the playoffs. This is a different world with the bowls and we are starting to learn just how different it is.

Some of our posters and those of fairly new FBS teams don't have alot of historical perspective on how difficult the Sun Belt had it in past years getting teams into bowls. I guess for more of the old school having 3 spots this year guaranteed and 4 next year is quite a bit better than it was. If the Belt can consistently starting next year with GS and App fully eligible get 5-6 bowl eligible teams I have to believe it will lead to a 5th tie in.

I know this is going to sound bragging but I really believe bowls would like to have GS or App as participants as both I beiieve would bring good crowds to a bowl game that was in some reasonable driving distance. So hopefully the Belt can use this as a good argument toward getting a 5th bowl.

I agree with all but feel the 5th bowl needs to be in the western side of the conference. There are 3 bowls close to Georiga. The closest SBC bowl to San Marcos is a 7.5 hour drive.

Our AD brought up Little Rock again yesterday as an option. Wants to tie it in with CUSA because they lack a local tie in outside of Heart of Dallas. All their other bowls are significant distances away from most member schools.

I'm okay with Little Rock.

I'm okay with Little Rock.
But is Little Rock ok with Little Rock? Could they actually put on a decent bowl with events and such?

This is the way the bowls have worked for a long time:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=19...43,2408178

I don't have a huge problem with it. I wouldn't mind a 7-win rule across the board, as someone around here has stated. And I know I'll hate it if GSU is left out for these reasons in the future (I'm sure our crowds will work against us unless we can turn that around by the time we're bowl-ready). But other than the playoffs, they're all just a show, and it's hard to fault those putting them on for keeping their best interests in mind.

Does suck for the Bobcats, though. I'd hate it if that were my Panthers. Luckily(?) we were nowhere close to that problem.

Probably not. City would probably forget there is a game or expect the teams to pay them for the service of coming to the game.

Little Rock is a very backwards place.

The trouble would be the conference not having enough 7 win teams to fill the four bowl slots by their own rule and losing them. Just a thought.

Or them taking a 7-5 cusa team over a 6-6 SBC team because that's how we see it right? 7-5 over 6-6

I am sorry, that is insane. Reward the team that does not have a winning record.

That would definitely be a concern. I wouldn't mind such a rule because the idea of teams with winning records advancing just feels better, but it's not going to bother me either way (and may one day benefit my Panthers to keep it as is).

Just a rule that says all 7-5 and above teams get placed before 6-6 teams would be ideal but I do understand how some bowls might not go for that.
