How about they leave it all on the field because they want to win, regardless of the opponent and how it might affect a team they've already played?
player psyche is part of any game and every athlete, this is a fact. I am sure players play harder in "must win" games than other ones. This game is not must-win, their season is over, and beyond all that they would be doing their rivals a favor. Tough spot to be in.

Think 2013 cajuns vs. USA. Post-season and championship already locked up for ULL, USA playing for eligibility, ULL get destroyed.

I suspect you've never played competitive sports. Correct?

I have actually. Baseball at HS level. Actually blows my mind y'all are arguing circumstances dont influence players mindsets.

sorry, real men that play contact sports dont have that mindset.... unless they read Huffpost on a regular basis
