RE: Huskie Wire's Nitz Comments on treatment of Carey by Fans
This type of thinking is what has gotten college football into trouble. You give someone -- often someone unproven -- a better contract financially than his predecessor to do what? Become coach of your team and at least maintain success or improve upon it. So the guy's doing exactly what you're paying him for and years before the contract is due to be renewed, there has to be an extension. And another is expected a year or two later, but what happens? a) if he's successful, someone comes along and he still jumps ship; b) if he's not successful, you're stuck having to buy him out. No one seems to notice this is happening everywhere in college football? Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. Seriously, is there a program left in this country where anyone is expecting (--or even wanting--) their coach to remain there until he retires?

People need to listen to the conference call each week the MAC does as well as NIUs weekly press conference.
Carey always says the other persons name and asks how they are. He legit does it over 90% of interviews. He's a nice guy, he just doesn't give much to answers.
He definitely is not abrasive. Start asking Nitz, Either tribune reporter that has dealt with NIU, barry rozner, and the dude from the Cleveland plain dealer, Rod is a nice guy who gives zero info.

As for the extension, he doesn't need one. Let the contract play out a little closer to its end. All indications point at continued success and he would be rewarded for that.
As for the recruiting, Coach Kill got it done. He not only recruited guys that fit his system, watch Minnesota, he's still doing it. Span is like David Cobb, he has physical defenders. Yes, spanning was a. Novak recruit, but he really thrived in the. Kill offense.
Also, the guys he got to DeKalb made the orange bowl go. That's if you don't give him credit for Lynch. Yes, PJ was the lead recruiter on guys like Ashford and Martel, but his guys got Ward, Baxter, Jefferson, moved anthony wells inside. Also, Brown has been huge this year.
I think the word is still out on Doeren. I only look at Lewis and think man, that was a great get by Doeren. The aurora kids were recruited by him, but I think those 3 were more in love with NIU than the staff. Bishop was huge as was moving Stingily to RB.
But, I think Carey has shown his staff can recruit. Yes, he has the OB and the facilities, but the guys he's recruitmg haven't even had the time to develop and are making impacts. There's how many true freshman playing, how many true sophomores. He was smart in making Kane and Ward the lead guys. They've identified NIU type guys.

Am I missing something? Why the hell would they give him another extension at this point? His contract already goes until 2019. If he is still around in a few years and doing well, then it will be fine but it seems to early to extend even farther at this point.
To increase his buyout.

Maybe, but it doesn't matter. If a P5 school wants Carey, they'll pay it.
We're always gonna be losing coaches at NIU until we pay a more competitive salary. Hell, Sun Belt coaches have higher average salaries than MAC coaches.

How does getting more money for him leaving not matter?

I agree with the restructuring the contract for a higher buyout and throw in the clause that the team getting him plays us in a 1-1. I'm almost positive there were a few coaches with that in the contract.

Cute, but does more buyout money really matter as far as building a stronger program at NIU? Not in my book.
What matters is doing everything possible to make the NIU job a destination, not a launching pad.

And you plan on doing that by paying your coach less than EMU's coaching is getting paid?

Excuse me, what?
I'm saying we need to commit to paying our Head Coach a much higher salary. That requires a bigger financial commitment over the long-term. The amount of money we'd gain from a larger buyout clause would be small compared to what we need to be paying our Head Coach in yearly salary, long-term.
If we don't, the coaching carousel is going to continue at NIU.

I rather pony up money for the assistants than give Carey an extension.

Excellent point, but we need big pay increases for both Head and Asst. Coaches if we want to be the "Boise State of the Midwest."

Coaches always want 4 or 5 years on their contract. When they are winning they want the last year to roll over. They prefer this for recruiting. It makes it harder to recruit when you only have 1 or 2 years left on a deal.

For NIU, what is the definition of a rebuilding season? Coach Carey has proved he's a winner. End of story.
