RE: O.T. How was ECU able to cultivate and keep such a rabid fanbase
Something to also note- ECU does not have much history in basketball. Herrion really showed that ECU could wake up fans when the Pirates were part of C-USA North(?) which had Charlotte, Cincinnati, Louisville, DePaul, Marquette, and South Florida. We stole a few wins and had students fill the arena.
My hope is that the American will also wake up ECU basketball. I think ECU can get to 8,000 fans a game with some success with bringing in powers like Connecticut, Memphis, and Cincinnati.
ECU fans know college basketball. Historically, it has been hard when you have Wake, Duke, NCSU, and Carolina down the road and those teams play on such a high level many years.

We just need to knock off one. That will change everything for a program like ours.

After two heartbreaking losses, we still packed over 48k in the stadium today!

What you fail to understand is that a large segment of the student population comes from places smaller than Greenville. It is all relative.

This thread is about ECU's fans and I don't want to distract from that, but it would be interesting to read what other universities in large cities are doing to build fan bases. UH has an effort underway to make the school more residential. It now has over 10,000 beds on campus and there are large residential developments adjacent to the school. These steps will help over an extended time.
Except for ECU and perhaps UConn, we all need to step up.
Required to? No. Coaxed or some other similar word. More likely.
We have some power in the NC House now. UNC knows that it is in their best interests(in order to get stuff they want) to keep their country cousins happy.

I live in the Triangle. There's a big exodus toward Greenville on Game Day.
Good luck driving the speed limit on U.S. 264. The speed limit is 70 m.p.h. But if traffic is tight, and you're in the left lane going 70 or better, you can always count on a carload of Pirates (car flags flying) to ride your bumper, flash their headlights, and flip you off as soon as they can get around you. These people would rather get a speeding ticket than not barrel-ass Down East as fast as possible.
Folks, 70 m.p.h. is fast enough . . . and it gets me to G-Vegas with time to spare. LOL !!

That NC State team finished 15-16 on and we played them on CSTV.

Random fact: all three speeding tickets I have received in my life were on 264 between Wilson and Greenville
However, I got them all back when it was a 55 mph road instead of 70.

The main problem we have in BB is being a Football school in a Basketball state. Hopefully the AAC will allow us some inroads to recruits that we have previously not been able to attract in CUSA. Lebo's last class seems to already show that ability. It will take a couple of recruiting classes to show much improvement. If not? There are going to be some very disappointed ECU fans.

RE: O.T. How was ECU able to cultivate and keep such a rabid fanbase
ECU has very few "Wal*Mart" type fans like unc and state. Kids that go to ECU become Pirates. It is a family thing. I have seen someone in an ECU shirt in Florida or Virginia and we end up talking about football....always football.
UNC tried to keep ECU from getting university status, a med school, and a dental school over several decades. The statewide media is all ACC all the time to the point of some stations hardly post our scores on local sports reports. That's why our chip is real. Many younger Pirates have no clue the crap we had to wade through to get to where we are today. ACC schools would not come to Greenville to play or we would get the old "everything to gain and nothing to lose" phrase when they would drop us from their schedules.
I think being in this league and the exposure we get nationally will pay off in recruiting. We have had interest from good players who truly did not know we were FBS since the switch. That's why losing those two to Temple and UC really hurt. We have had several recruits who came to a home game say they had no idea our stadium and crowd was as large as it is.

I always think these responses are so comical. Thousands of ECU fans leave "entertainment rich" metro areas to attend ECU games every weekend. I personally drive pass BOA and Center Cityuptown Charlotte or whatever we call it now to go to ECU games. I shed all those "entertainment" opportunities to drive 4.5 hours one way to ECU. Thousands do every weekend that is why we have a hard time with week night games. Oh yea, we do not view a ECU football game as "entertainment."
