Statement by the American on NCAA governance.
Quote:PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference presidents and directors of athletics have issued the following statement regarding the NCAA Division I governance structure following today's business meeting in Orlando:
The American Athletic Conference strongly supports initiatives that contribute to the health, welfare, and enhanced college experience of our student-athletes. We look forward to evaluating the proposed autonomous legislation when released in December. However, our member schools have long provided and continue to provide a number of benefits which have been deregulated under NCAA rules, including extended opportunities for degree completion, scholarship protection, medical support, and meeting the nutritional needs of student-athletes. The American and its members remain committed to funding student-athlete scholarships up to the full cost of attendance if and when such legislation is adopted.
"Our Conference has been in the forefront of the initiatives designed to address the needs of our student-athletes. I am proud of our schools, which have taken a leadership position in committing to fund athletic scholarships up to the full cost of attendance, and which have supported reforms in many areas which will contribute to student athlete health and well-being," said Commissioner Michael Aresco.

Agreed. Aresco is annoying as hell to me when he does the lawyer/politician speak--which he does 99% of the time. Also, I'm not convinced that Tulsa and Temple will go along with what Aresco said "when and If" the legislation goes through.

It would be more disturbing if Aresco DIDN'T say this. This was the expectation - not a surprise.

Tulsa has $$$, they'll be on-board... I'm not quite clear on Temple just yet.

Tulsa has a large endowment.........however, their football program financially has been struggling big time for many years. They do not have the $$$ you say. The Endowment money cannot be spent on athletics.

Tulsa has lots of money and part of the reason temple folded the baseball program was to solidify and get ready for this

Knowing Tulane, we will spend every penny needed to meet the P5 minimum - and not one red cent more.
We have to maintain our "bottom half" status. :D

Statement by the American on NCAA governance.
It is my understanding that Memphis will spend the $ to keep pace with the P5 conferences. As soon as you don't do that, your school is relegated to second-class status permanently. Those who do keep pace may eventually have a chance to move up to the adults table.

You honestly believe Memphis can "keep up". You're way behind as it is now and who knows how many rules and allowances they'll pass above and beyond the stipend cost.

The current setup in FBS doesn't really force you to spend anything if you don't want to.
In 2012, UL Monroe were at around $11M: http://www.sbnation.com/college-football...tball-2012
(Note: That's about a third of Tulane's projected 2015-16 budget with the new stadium - and Tulane's numbers will stand to grow over the next 4-5 years.)
Also, please keep in mind that the talent pool is growing, and that spending more money doesn't always make you good. Oregon are a success story, but there are other schools that spend money and get not that much for it.

Memphis can keep up. The reason we got behind was our last AD. Memphis has been pouring money into to football for the first time. Just look at the conference standing for proof You really don't know anything about the Memphis program.

I don't think you know much about TU. .
You must have not read my earlier post so I will repeat for you. TU has a very good endowment, but their football program does not have a lot of money and has always struggled financially and endowments do not help.
Hopefully all of the schoools in the AAC can make the financial requirements of the new agenda.....but It may not be practical or possible for all.
