RE: Gasol trade?
So you think if the money is equal, Gasol would rather spend the prime of his career rebuilding another lottery team in a big market instead of contending for a championship in a city he's lived in since he was 14 with teammates he built the franchise with? the grizz have enough space to sign him to a max next year and still spend 10-15 million on another free agent

I'd rather lose him for nothing than Randle's broken leg and Nick Young.

RE: Gasol trade?
I hope he doesn't leave. It seems a smaller market like Memphis would be less stressful on him. I'm sure Pau would let him know how it is to play in LA.
Didn't Vince Carter recently say he liked the idea of playing in Memphis cause they are overlooked by the talking heads, in addition to Memphis having a solid core. If I were a free agent I would look at teams such as Mem, San Ant or OKC. Even Charlotte or New Orleans.
Just my opinion which counts for nada.

RE: Gasol trade?
You don't trade Gasol unless you KNOW 100% that he isn't re-signing. We don't attract big time free agents, and he's one that we have a shot at keeping. So you stay with Marc until the bitter end. If you get to the offseason, and he's about to sign elsewhere, attempt to make it a sign and trade if its at all possible to work out (unlikely).
You only trade him in-season if he walks into Chris Wallace's office and says "Mr. Wallace, I am not re-signing with the Grizzlies after this season, and you cannot change my mind." And if that happens, group text the other 29 GM's ASAP.

Nope. I'm a Grizz fan.
He can get $20M/ year in a major market. I don't think he stays if that's the case. If december rolls around and he won't sign an extension...we gotta look at trading him, no? Just to see what's out there...
We can offer him more than anyone else can.

On top of that, teams will know we are trading him b/c he isn't expected to resign with us so they won't want to give up assets when they can simply wait and sign him during free agency.
when did it become common knowledge that Gasol would not sign with the Grizzlies?
Seriously. Lipe or Herrington (one or the other) pretty much said that they thought it was most likely that he'd resign here, NY story notwithstanding.

"Next summer, Grizzles center Marc Gasol, a versatile and supremely talented 7-foot center, will be a free agent. The Knicks, with more than $20 million of cap space, are expected to make a run at him. Pau, in town with the Bulls, his new team, said it is “possible” his 29-year-old brother could wind up in New York and mentioned he has talked to Marc about Knicks president Phil Jackson in the past."
... and maybe not about only money ? Who knows. Money tends to make decisions doe. Is this a Skal thread ?

Yes, IF we sign him during free agency this summer. However, an extension in December would pay him $18.2M per year instead of the $20M he is expected to get on the market. That being said, there's more money to be made if he waits it out and signs in the summer. I don't know about you, but the thought of Marc being wined & dined for an entire summer by super stars in big markets doesn't make me feel all warm & fuzzy inside.
I get it...we can't trade away the franchise for a few young role players and a pick (what we'd likely get in a trade). But, if this thing drags out and he is convinced to resign elsewhere, getting nothing in return will sting.

RE: Gasol trade?
All the pessimistic idiots that lurk in this town would love nothing more than to see us trade Marc. "See, I told you the Grizzlies wouldn't ever be anything!" "Grizzlies have always been cheap!" Same stuff we got after we traded Rudy's sorry ass and let Lionel go. You know they're just waiting for something to complain about.

There isn't "a thing.' Marc is probably not signing any extension. No one really expects this to happen.
We will be able to offer Marc more money in free agency than any other team. Barring something unforeseen, Memphis will probably offer him the most money they can. Everyone pretty much expects this to happen.
It's possible that Marc might choose to go elsewhere. But given that a) we can offer him more money than anyone else and b) he likes playing here and has deep ties to the area, as long as the Grizzlies show they are commited to continuing to being competitive, and there's absolutley no reason to believe they won't, then the greatest likelihood is Marc will be a Grizzly next year.
Now it is possible that he might choose to go somwhere else even if it isn't the most liklly scenario, and we're going to be hearing about potential suitors (see New York a couple of weeks ago) all year. But getting yourself worked into a lather about what's going to happen after the season when we're only four games into it (especially when we've won all four games) is just silly.

I assume this is being worked backchannel. I assume that Marc has informed the Grizz of his attentions in a wink, wink fashion and if the team is relatively sure he is going they will shop him, as that would be the responsible thing to do. However, with the extra year of free agency to offer and the winning core/culture, I expect him to stay…
As always, I know very little.

The Grizz can offer him the most money though
Plus we can offer him a longer deal than anyone else can. It's surprising how so much bs can be made out of so little information.

RE: Gasol trade?
I don't understand why people are piling on Hometown Tiger here. It's a very legitimate concern. The Grizzlies will be taking a massive risk by allowing him to enter free agency. Gasol may be of the mind that this is where he wants to be right now, but you never know what could happen between now and July to change his mind. If Pau is able to influence his brother's decision in any way, he would implore his brother to move on to greener pastures.
Losing Gasol for nothing would leave this team with: Conley on an expiring, a declining ZBo on a 2 yr/20 mil, a declining TA, CLee, a couple of rooks, a boatload of capspace and a likely lottery pick that belongs to one of the most stacked teams in the league. Gulp.

If Gasol leaves, we go into rebuild mode. It is what it is. If we trade him now, we're just deciding to go into rebuild mode now and throwing away the season. Yeah I guess it's a risk "letting" Marc go into free agency. It's no less of a risk trying to trade him for assets. Hell it's a risk if we sign him to a max deal. Roster management is inherently risky.
Still, the most likely outcome is that Marc is a Grizzly next year. And there's no point in worrying about it 4 games into this season. I'd be more worried about whether our bench is ever going to wake up, if we can continue winning with such an anemic offense, and if no to both of those, what kind of moves we can make to make the team better this season.

Maybe I am being pessimistic. If he doesn't sign an extension in December (isn't expected to) and it gets to free agency, I think it'll be very hard to bring him back. Just my thoughts...
This is uncharted territrory for this franchise. We've never had a guy that will be THE best player on the market worth MAX money.
