So what happens if no G5 team is ranked in the top 25?
I get it that the Access bowl bid goes to the highest ranked G5 team.
However, the Playoff Committee only ranks 25 teams....so how would they pick the G5 team if none were ranked.?

They would extend the rankings to 30 or 35 or however deep they have to go.

Next question--will they do that if no lower-FBS team is ranked in Week 2, or would that wait until the final rankings?

Are you sure about that? Or are you making a logical assumption? Has that been documented anywhere?

I swear I saw somewhere they actually rank the top 40 but only release the top 25. Of course I can't find it now.

They did say at some point. I believe they might simply rate the top G5 teams if none are in the top 25. Really though since it's only conference champions, you are only going to be comparing around 5 teams (maybe a couple more as you could have co-champs in the American and Sunbelt).

RE: So what happens if no G5 team is ranked in the top 25?
AP poll came out today. No AAC team got a single vote. 12 teams (counting Navy) what an awful year for this league. People can say what they want about ECU, but we beat VT when they were top 15/20 and coming off a win over ohio st. We dropped 70 on a then good UNC, and we lost at a then good SC. ECU has carried the league. only 3 cartel 5 wins for AAC and ECU got 2 of them. We can still go 10-2 and hope CSU and Boise lose 1 more each...Marshall could slip, but an undefeated Marshall still doesn't deserve the access nod over ECU, CSU or Boise.....

Right. If no G5 champs are in ther top 25, they will simply take the 5 G5 champs and rank them 1-5 based upon the same criteria and process they use to create their top 25 rankings.

I wonder if they will do that before the final ranking, though. My impression is no. Guess we'll find out Tuesday night. If not, we'll be in the dark until a G5 team gets ranked again.

I remember reading that the Access Bowl goes to the "highest rated" team. You can take that more than one way, but I'm thinking the G5 gets it no matter what happens.

In a situation like this, having a bunch of teams tied at the top of the American could help us.
Say Marshall or Boise State (or Colorado State) gets upset by a team with 4 or 5 losses in their title game; that would leave the committee choosing between a 4 or 5 loss conference champ from those conferences or their pick of Houston, Memphis, Cincy, ECU, or UCF from the American. That is assuming, of course, that nobody in the MAC or SBC goes on a run to finish strong.

RE: So what happens if no G5 team is ranked in the top 25?
I proposed in another thread that is now closed (OT) that their be a 4 team playoff of the top 4 G5 teams to crown the Access Bowl game. I still believe that is a great way to eliminate any doubts. The G5 conferences can eliminate championship games if needed or they choose to.

I don't know if that's the case, but there will inherently be an "others receiving votes" category that received votes but not enough to make it to the top 25, so the highest G5 team in that group would receive the nod.

What VT was rated preseason has no bearing on how good they were, they are a mediocre team. What made NC good then but not now, simply that you beat them. They have proven to be not very good. Why was SC good then but not now, they are getting beat consistently. The truth is , ECU has yet to beat a team that RIGHT NOW has a winning record.

This is not good, as it will give fodder for those P5 folks who want to take away the G5 reserved slot. IF no G5 team was ranked would be easy to argue we're not 'deserving'. Surprised there was no conditional attached that a G5 team was required to be ranked to win the bid.
FWIW, parity could kill the AAC just like it killed the Big East many years. We're just not a conference like many of the P5, led by 2-3 elete programs. We're a fairly even conference, all things considered.

Honestly - If Marshall wins out
They should get the access bid. 13-0 should beat out 2 or 3 loss teams with a better schedule. I say this knowing full well how atrocious their schedule is.
It's tough going undefeated, and often a better team can lose to a lesser team. When a team avoids those slip ups, they should be rewarded.

if marshal goes........ i hope they get utterly embarrassed. this way, a team with a high school schedule will NEVER get selected again. this in fact will do more harm to c-usa than if they didnt send somebody to the access bowl.

High schools are insulted by your comment. They play a much tougher schedule than Marshall.

Well, if we are going by what you said about how we are to look at teams, it renders the bolded statement invalid as well. We should be waiting until the end of the season before passing "the truth is..." judgment.
