1. Marshall: until they lose its all them at the top
2a. Tech: Had ups and downs. Highs are very high and lows are very low.
2b. Rice: I'm starting to think if they had scheduled better early this would be a team in the Access Bowl conversation
4. MTSU: still #2 in the east despite a tough loss.
5. UTEP: has been fantastic the last few weeks, their coach gets it.
6. UAB: can beat anybody anywhere anytime if they play well.
7: WKU: Not a bad team at all, just an incomplete team at this point. They will get it together soon.
This is the stat to decide the La Tech/Rice game. La Tech #2 in FBS in most turnovers gained. Rice #2 in FBS for fewest turnovers lost. Whoever holds their trend wins.
I think what's interesting is that Tech is 5-0, but the loss to NSU is still sticking in everyone's mind. If we had won that game, even by 3 points, I think everyone would be looking at us differently.
And I get that. We learned our lesson to not overlook an in state school. The NSU debacle will go down in Louisiana Tech lore. We have eaten our humble pie on many message boards. We were picked to be 4th in the West, and yet here we are in the mix of things. Beat the hell out of us for losing to a FCS school - trust me, as fans we have all done it, and I'm sure the team has everyday since that game. BUT we are 5-0 and control our destiny. We are hungry for that West title and a chance to play Marshall for the Championship in only our 2nd year of CUSA which most of you thought we didn't belong.

Rice's loss to ODU and LaTech's loss to NSU are both comparable egg-layings. I don't follow LaTech, were there extenuating circumstances? Rice's defense was seriously beat-up for the ODU game. The fact that guys couldn't step-up and fill those holes was disappointing, but the defense made some pretty big changes after that game (one of CB's moved back to safety, redshirt pulled from true freshman CB and he's been getting snaps) plus Rice had a lot of defensive players injured that game. Rice is still vulnerable deep, but the pass-rush has improved a lot since ODU (which helps) and the depth chart changes in the secondary seem to have helped some as well.

For the NSU game, Tech just laid a big fat egg. It came out of nowhere. They'd have lost to anyone playing that day. NSU played a near-perfect game.
Frankly, that's what is so scary about it. The egg was laid with no warning and was totally inexplicable.

I make absolutly no excuses for that loss. That would be taking the victory away from the team that wanted it the most. However, it was quite impressive how we muffed a point, they scored, fumbled the ball, they scored, intercepted they scored to win. All within the last 4 minutes of the ball game. It was like watching your best friend kissing your wife. You can only just stand there and wonder why.

It's really hard to rate the conference. The 2 FCS losses are just killer. FIU would be a top half team overall if they hadn't loss to Bethune-Cookman in my opinion. I'm not saying they won't be in the top 3 of the East standings by the end of the year, but just overall body of work currently. All based on Massey Football Composite stats...though my opinion is a bit different then the actual Massey composite rankings.

Like I told that Houston Grad in the parking lot after the 2011 game. I felt like somebody had shot my dog. Tech football can give you the biggest highs and the worst lows.

Please never mention the 2011 Houston game again. Absolute WORST football experience of my life.
