at the same time, it happens every week. that's on the whole team.
my question is why did we recruit him if he didn't know how to tackle in HS? When you play defense, you don't stand and wait for the ballcarrier to come to you...you aggressively go to the ballcarrier and make contact, wrap your arms around his midsection and put him on the ground. When the ballcarrier is 200lbs and your defensive player is 285 lbs, its not rocket science, advantage defense!

RE: WKU Game
Arm tackling isnt just choosing to arm tackle, it's being out of position and/or slower the the opponent. There has been a big improvement in being in position, but our defense is still slow. Who is the secondary was recruited as a FBS recruit? Byrum and Davilla?

The defense is slowly getting better but isn't ready to face oneof the top offenses in college football (avg close to 550 yards per game). The recruiting has taken huge step up, but these guys still need to be inthe system 2-3 years before they can really compete.

Except that is not the issue at all. Our tackling issues are occurring beyond the line as our comparatively small D linemen are usually trapped or blocked out.
What we have then are fast 200+ lb FBS caliber RBs AND receivers going against our smaller and often slower FCS LBs and DBs.

Seems like our guys are so scared that the ball carrier is going to get past them that they play off the guy so much the opponent gets an extra 4 yards each play anyway. And once our first guy gets juked and misses its off to the races for the bad guys.

RR, I kniw that may have been the case. I guess my point is that the bad D and tackling is throughout college football. We just seem to be making it an art form.

And even in the pros. Ever watched DeAngelo Hall?

We made the CUSA High 5 video this week! Of course it is 'The Pass' at the 3 yard line. That ball just squirted out of TH's hands. That was just bad luck.

Our defensive scheme, gap coverage, and positional awareness were good?

Are you serious?

Indeed I am.
We have, for the most part, been in pretty good position since the horrid performance that was the Hampton game.
There are always going to be busted plays, but since Hampton, our gap discipline has been very good and our schemes have been relatively sound.

Our issues have been that our Dline has often been physically overwhelmed, our DBs have played too soft, and of course our tackling.
In fact, on the way to Norfolk Saturday, the color on 94.1 guy made the comment that we were "covering the gaps, and in the right positions, but we just couldn't tackle"
All three of the above can be directly attributed to differences in our athletic ability vs the opponents.

If we were so out of position (other than soft), we probably wouldn't notice our tackling woes as much, because there would be no one near enough to even try. 03-banghead

Scroll down a little to where it says 'High 5', sit through the commercial, then experience the pain.

RE: WKU Game
Im re-watching the game on the link posted in the viewing option thread......

I love 2 of the wrinkles we threw in on offense this week.

1) David Washington as an H-Back. Certainly not your traditional H-Back, but he got his nose in there and blocked in the running game and we got him out on routes vs. the linebackers in the passing game.

2) Motion. We ran a lot more motion, particularly the RB out of the backfield. This dictated that Western Kentucky had to show their coverage.

Nice to see the offense continue to evolve and add more options.
