Mississippi St. just had the biggest win in their history and I'm guessing right now is the absolute high point of the program so far. So what's next? I think we know:
After Mississippi State's biggest win, can Bulldogs keep Dan Mullen?
Yes we know the main point of the story all too well, but part of the article led me to easily find this thread from a Mississippi St. board in 2013:
It's time to politely offer Mullen the door
Any of that sound similar to a lot of posts around here?
Might this give some around here pause? Ah, who am I kidding. Sorry for the interruption, many of you can get back to your over the top incessant sarcasm, negativity and pessimism now....
These are good questions.
I think Mullen is likely gone after this year. Some top job will open up somewhere...they always do...and Mullen will cash in. Michigan would be my early guess, but we'll see.
To apply the "lesson" to our coaching staff, I think the questions are as follows: (and I'll put them in a slightly different order than you have them in...)
1- Does UC have the confidence that Tommy Tuberville can turn the corner? That's what Mississippi State had to answer in keeping Mullen over the past two years. Mullen won with Croom's recruits and then suffered a down period while rebuilding. Is this the case with Tuberville?
2- Should Tommy Tuberville stay, and win...on the order of Chris Mullen at Mississippi State...would he then stay at UC or would he, like Chris Mullen is likely to do, "cash in" and move up? To this, only Tommy Tuberville knows the answer. But I'd give it even-money either way. Coaching outside of the "Power5" world is going to be tough in terms of resources and the fact that you will likely never get a shot at the CFP. But Tuberville's an older man than Mullen is. Mullen is almost guaranteed to LEAVE MSU at some point or another, if nothing else than to "prove" he's as good as everyone says he is. Tuberville's already been there. Who knows?
It can happen, I'll give you that.
(The other realistic thing is that UC is not firing Tuberville under any circumstance and we all know that. There isn't the $$$ available to do it, it would set the program back at least five more years, and it would throw crap on the BB program. SO...this is all a fantasy exercise anyway...)
