This is ridiculous. Campbell started two seasons. In his first season he completed 63.9% of his passes, 2296 yards, 22 TD, 7 INT. He averaged 229.6 YPG and 8 yards per attempt. That's not "little". That's a really good season. That's a better year than every other QB at W&M since 2003 except 2004 Campbell. At Cluley's current pace he'd throw for 500 fewer yards in two more games with three more passing attempts. Again, I'm not saying Cluley is a waste, just that he hasn't been the spark the offense was missing last year. He throws a pretty deep ball but not much else and they barely used the deep ball last week.

I like Cluley and think we can win with him leading the team. I am prepared to take some lumps as he matures.

RE: W&M offense over the last 10 years in chart form
I am not anti-Coach Laycock. I think he has done a great job and still is capable of taking us deep into the playoffs. I was merely explaining where the change began. Having a defense like we have had in several of the last five years, does change your thinking. Second guessing is easy. The whole coaching staff knows how important the Villanova game is and that we cannot win playing against them close to the vest. I expect we will take some significant chances and call for plays down the field Saturday. Whether we can protect Cluley, whether receivers will be open, and whether he can get them the ball remains to be seen. Overall, Cluely has done ok for a new starter except for the New Hampshire game. I think if we had a better answer, he would be playing. So, perhaps we can find the first multiple year starter since Jake Phillips. Getting to the playoffs is not easy, particularly in our league. If we can win our home games, we can make the playoffs. So, let's see if we can get big time support from the campus and crowd this weekend. I am sure the staff was surprised at both sides of the ball Saturday, but i expect they will play much better Saturday. Whether it will be enough to beat a top 5 team, is uncertain.

I like Cluley too. He has not had much time to throw this year, the pass blocking has not been good. The coaches are going to have to come up with plays that are either quicker hitters or perhaps have some movement instead of straight drop backs.

Campbell will remain as the holder of the best season a W&M QB had for a long time, I'd rather compare Cluely to Craig Argo, J. Brosnahan, or Graham and Caprio from the last 2 years. I'd still say we are weak at WR and Revell's injury really hurt for the middle distance passing game. We have got to try and get Tre the ball down the field this week.

Campbell has the 2nd best season for a W&M QB in recent memory. The best is Ortiz's 2012 season which will be talked about in hushed tones by W&M fans until the heat death of the universe.

W&M offense over the last 10 years in chart form
Rocco is correct. What Rocco fails to add is that for three games, Ortiz came on in relief and showed FBS size, a cannon arm and better speed than Cluley after our starter threw passes that fell from the air like rocks after ten yards, and showed less speed than the average QB club member huffing his way from st bedes to the zable bathroom. And he played well as a starter vs. Towson and JMU. So of course we are prone to focus more on the "look" test for Ortiz than on his statistics. Ill always remember the game we lost to Lafayette in the rain, Ortiz came in in the 4th and the Lafayette announcers all but accused JL of throwing the game by keeping him on the bench.

He got in the Maryland game (if I recall) only due to injury. He (pretty cold) threw a long one just out of the reach of the WR that would have won the game. Another one of our many patented multi FG (and TD starved) games.

I think that long pass was to McBride. It slipped through his fingers on what would have been an amazing diving catch. Caprio was the starter and did get hurt. If I remember correctly, we had other QBs already injured also, which is what got Ortiz on the field.

It was quite possibly the greatest season ever by a QB who completed slightly over half his passes. Ortiz and JohnMark Ludwick deserve statues on campus.

I think Rocco moved into curmudgeon territory with that post. Ortiz and JML are hardly similar.

Rocco is stuck on mocking some phantom poster who allegedly stated JML would have won us like 30 more games had he played.

The pass was to Ryan Moody. It traveled about 65 yards in the air and could have been caught, but would have been a very good catch.

Of course. I remember now being worried he got hurt.

The pass against Md. was to Ryan Moody and it was catchable....Cap overthrew a wide open Tre early in the game .
