What happen to Brinlee?
Not sure, but after the Presbyterian game he was no longer on the roster.

I know he didn't take his red-shirt yet...but he's played this year. Is it easy to get a medical waiver when you haven't yet taken your red-shirt year? Or am I missing something?
I think it's easier when you haven't already redshirted since you haven't been on campus as long. He's also missed quite a bit of time in previous seasons. I know he hasn't eclipsed the 30% of snaps this year.
These can be tricky to get, but I'd say he would probably have an easier time than a lot of players.
I think the rule is if you do not play a certain percentage of the first 3 or 4 games, you can still get a redshirt. Don't think it is about medical

That is incorrect.
To be eligible for a "regular" redshirt, an athlete cannot have participated in ANY contests for his sport during the season. Link
Quote:"The term "redshirt" is used to describe a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. For example, if you are a qualifier, and you attend a four-year college your freshman year, and you practice but do not compete against outside competition, you would still have the next four years to play four seasons of competition. Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you.
Any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition."
The 3 game, or 30% threshold for participation applies only to medical redshirts.

Just an additional nugget...If NIU plays in the MACC and a bowl then its 4 games (30% of 14 = 4.2)

They have to be VERY confident that TLL will get a medical redshirt.

It's not automatic. Medical documentation is required to show that the injury is, in fact, season-ending.
I would assume though that NIU will have everything in order when the application is made.

totally agree. Its a risk. He and his doctors have to prove that he has a season ending injury and he is rehabilitating it on schedule per his doctors orders.

The application for a Medical Redshirt is made to the conference the athlete's school belongs to. If denied, it can be appealed to the NCAA.

the 30 % threshold is what i was referring to, misspoke on medical, don't have time to look it up. It would seem the only reason to do this is due to an injury.

I guess my dream of seeing Akeem and TLL together on the field again will never happen.

RE: Tommy Lee Out For The Year
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Tommy Lee play for NIU. I feel bad for him and I hope to see him back on the field next season. It will be fun to see what he can do against the Buckeyes in Columbus next fall if he is granted the red shirt.

Quote:"[The injury] wasn't an all of the sudden thing. It was a culmination of things that got built up that all of the sudden it got to a point at Northwestern where it got so bad he couldn't do it after that game anymore. We were hoping [his health] would come around again, but it certainly did not," Carey said after Tuesday's practice at Huskie Stadium
I'm just guessing...but I'm thinking it's a continuation of his foot injury of last year.

I wonder if it is similar to Akeem's injury from last year. He might keep tweaking it in practice and games.

Hopefully not b/c it seems like that injury is still lingering for Akeem.

When is it determined if he gets the RS? How long of wait is there before a decision is made?

I don't think it'll come until the offseason.
