The best college basketball or football team (ever) - old timers?
When compared to their timeframe / peers. Just curious --- but I have to think *one* of the 60s or 70s UCLA basketball teams. The Walton - Finch one? Football? Gees, was it Army? Notre Dame? Harvard? Have no clue.

This is not an old timer pick, but the best football team in my lifetime was the Tommie Frazier (sp?) led '95 Nebraska team. They destroyed everyone including Spurrier's Florida team in a bowl by a crazy score of 60 to 28 or something.

Some of Switzer's Oklahoma wishbone teams were fun to watch and hard to beat.
A decade later Florida State and Miami started playing a totally different type of college football.
For basketball the Duke teams and one I'll always remember is the UNLV team that won it all. Other than the Tigers great run in the 80s, I loved watching Phi Slamma Jamma
It's a little difficult though to compare teams in different eras. The 1979 Alabama team was pretty tough too. They had one of the best defenses. Nobody before or since has had moves quite like Johnny Rodgers. I've never seen someone change directions as fast as him.

Johnny Rodgers was indeed special. If I remember correctly, he ended up playing in Canada for some reason.
That video is from #1 Nebraska Vs #2 Oklahoma. That season Alabama and Auburn were also undefeated until they played and Alabama won. Bowl games matched up #1 Nebraska VS #2 Alabama and #3 Oklahoma VS #4 Auburn. Nebraska and Oklahoma killed the 2 southern teams prompting Bear Bryant to change his recruiting philosophy...."Big quick people are better than small quick people".
The bolded ones are the ones that I referenced. At least from memory and not knowing the exact year/season, all of my 4 picks made the top 10. For some reason the 95 Nebraska team doesn't register with me as a great team (I'm sure that they were and it's a memory problem for me) and the others were before I knew anything about football.

I looked it up. Here is Nebraska's schedule and results. They only trailed for half a quarter total all year. I enjoyed watching them, but they had a bunch of shady characters on the team.

September 9 2:30 PM at Michigan State W 50–10 73,891
September 16 1:00 PM Arizona State W 77–28 75,418
September 23 1:00 PM Pacific W 49–7 75,630
September 30 1:00 PM Washington State W 35–21 75,777
October 14 1:00 PM Missouri W 57–0 75,552

Washington State must have had a good team in 1995.
The best college basketball or football team (ever) - old timers?
For me in football it was the 01 Hurricanes, probably because I'd been living in Miami but mostly because they had such a chip on their shoulder and UF was scared to play them. As for basketball the most dominant team I ever saw was UNLV when they went undefeated the most entertaining team was PhiSlammaJamma.
