RE: Former UM player York pleads guilty to 2 charges
I'm on the fence as to whether York should get a chance at UT. That video definitely puts him in a very bad light. If we were just reading about it and there were no video, probably many of us would be much more ready to forgive. (Reminds me of the Rice domestic violence thing. When people knew that Rice had punched his girlfriend, knocking her unconscious, many were ready to forget it and move on. Once the second video appeared, not so much.)
Whatever anyone's position on whether York should get a chance, it seems very likely that he will get a chance with UT's program. I assume that he wouldn't have enrolled in school here unless someone involved with the program led him to believe that the football door would be open to him sometime in the future.
It's interesting that no one has suggested that UT should not have admitted him as a student. In other words, he's a good enough citizen to be in our student body, but not a good enough citizen to be on our football team? I'm not sure that there should be different standards.

I do not always agree with Campbell on football matters but he seems to be solid on citizenship and ethics. Since he is the person responsible for the program, I think we should let him use his best judgment on what is best for the school, the football program and the young man himself. Campbell makes the big bucks so he should earn them by making the tough decisions.

Regardless of our discussion of the matter there is no doubt that he will.

I do not understand why the conference does not suspend him. This is NOT rehabilitation. This is a matter of CMU doing whatever it takes to beat Toledo.
Pretty sad move by CMU.

Never had much respect for CMU (or WMU for that matter) so this is not surprising. They are considered party schools that no one ever takes seriously when looking to hire business school grads. There are exceptions of course, but not many.

I think you make valid points. After seeing the video the reservation I have is that it doesn't look like a situation of a couple guys spontaneously getting into it. It looked like an ambush. I've no idea what the beef was, but it would have to be pretty serious to justify that, and I don't see how it could be because that victim didn't seem to have any clue as to what was coming. If it was such a big deal it seems like he would have at least been on guard.

It never occurred to me that they would have any choice or knowledge of the situation. Don't think they exactly do a background check. Of course, now it's apparently more public knowledge. Even more pressure on the kid, not something he can put so easily into his past, particularly without statement from the victim.
Difficult road created by that fraction of an instant.
