Is NDSU the new Boise ?
Obviously they are FCS and winning championships so that is a big difference.
I mean as far as taking the little school that could title.
Instead of a blue field the crazy loud Fargo Dome.
Also both are in out of the way places adds a little mystery.
This isn't a slam against Boise I'm thinking they outgrew the curiosity. Also they aren't winning at the same clip. NIU has kinda taken that mantle in FBS . NDSU has become the media darling.

No, BSU beat the crap out of some decent teams and beat other teams like Georgia, Oregon and Oklahoma.

BSU had a chance to play for the D1 National Championship. It is impossible for NDSU to be the new Boise State.

They are media darlings with game day visiting two years in a row.
Utah had similar success but not the same attention.
Obviously they ended up better off even without the media attention.
I am not comparing the accomplishments or competition just the media attention.

I don't think they get anywhere near the media attention. One can easily follow the ESPN website and others and know nothing about NDU but when Boise was at its zenith they were unavoidable.

The oil and gas money is rolling into the state, so big things could be ahead for them.

The oil and gas money is generally far away from Fargo. But in that vane, Fargo has been booming for 20 years (software in large part due to a Microsoft campus there, agricultural machinery, and surprisingly with biotech). Fargo will be the site of the National Genotyping Agricultural Center, which is a huge win for NDSU even though its far from the center of the corn belt.
The oil related programs are almost exclusively at UND: geology, geology core library, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, law, and even medicine. All of those programs the state legislature and oil companies have greatly increased funding. NDSU has engineering, but not petroleum, chemical, or environmental, which are in greatest demand. Harold Hamm, the Bakken billionaire, recently donated millions to UND, which will name its Geology School after him. Hess Oil donated millions for a new UND engineering building to help Petroleum Engineering. Not aware of any significant oil donations to NDSU.
NDSU fans talk big about FBS, but they don't have the money for a new stadium for the MWC and FBS conferences aren't interested in inviting them, except the FCS Big Sky.

They should be the next Big 12 team but other than that, nope.

No, not until they do it as an FBS program. We won a national championship in 1-AA too, but the national accolades didn't come until after we moved up.

Appalachian state won three in a row after beating a top five team. They still did not become a national curiosity.
I wasn't necessarily comparing the two or the accomplishments.
Boise State received unprecedented media coverage for a Wac or low level non BCS conference.
NDSU has done the same at the FCS level.
They have that IT factor that Montana for FCS or Utah didn't have.

Yeah, but not right off the bat at all. Boise struggled a bit coming in, but developed because they 'owned' Idaho from then on. North Dakota would be able to get recruits way up there... and like Marshall, they Would hit the ground running, beating mid-level P5 teams (like they Do already).
The question is -- can they hit the ground running and turn into a mid-major powerhouse -> national powerhouse at least for a while? Yeah, maybe they can.
Marshall went downhill, starting in their last couple years in the MAC just being a good/decent MAC team, to CUSA where they slipped further into being a blah mid-major (but are back this year).
ND State basically likes the way it is -- I can't really blame them. But if they join D1A, they'll have more scholarships, more $$, but yes, more expenses (how much I guess depends on their situation). They could probably join MW, MAC, or CUSA of their choosing, whatever works better for them.

And that's because outside of "cupcake" games in September, the majority of college football fans simply don't care about 1-AA. Now that App State has moved up to the FBS level, if they start winning consistently and beating good P5 opponents, they will get some national attention.

RE: Is NDSU the new Boise ?
I tried to keep this thread on task.
Receiving an unprecedented level of attention at their level is the point.
Boise always seemed to have that vs UTAH or TCU even if they were in a bottom conference.
NDSU I think is receiving more attention than any FCS in history.
It's not about accomplishments
I'm comparing App St to NDSU because they both have recent three peat championship runs. APP even beat a top five team.
Similar to Utah crushing Alabama yet they didn't hold media attention.

They have that IT factor that Montana for FCS or Utah didn't have.
But ASU did pave the way for NDSU and FCS getting some respect. Combine that with NDSU's numerous wins over not just FBS but Power 5 schools and it's clear to see why they get respect, I don't even know why the P5 schedules them.

Ratings.
For teams like Minnesota or Iowa State, it is a regional game, it is relevant but not just regionally....nationally.

I think NDSU has become the little team that can .
The media darling even if they are FCS .
I should have titled this thread are they the new media darlings.
Then compared that to programs that have received unprecedented attention like Boise.
