Mecklenburg County has nothing to do with Boeing, BMW, Textile, Michelin, Milliken, ICAR, all in SC.

Perhaps you've heard of ATL.?

Cool, you have a few nice companies. All your cities suck except Charleston. Greenville is okay, but it is 60,000 people.

NC too was a king of textiles (and furniture and tobacco), but our politicians and business leaders had the foresight to see that it was a dying industry in America. We invested in infrastructure, education, technology, and healthcare. We are national leaders in a lot of industries today, including finance, tech and pharmaceuticals.

Companies move to SC for low cost labor. Companies move to places like Charlotte and Raleigh because they have great human capital, highly educated work forces, and cultural amenities, while maintaining a low cost of living.

South Carolina is fine, but it is way different than NC. NC attracts Fortune 500 headquarters. South Carolina is more of a manufacturing hub since labor costs are extremely low and Charleston port is one of the biggest on the east coast. The rural areas of NC may be similar culturally to SC, but the major metro areas now rule NC and will only assert more dominance on state policy going forward.

Yes Mount Holly, Statesville, Gastonia, Waxhaw and Concord rock! That's what pretty much encompasses what makes up " Charlotte".

Now for the state, Fayet-Nam, Goldsboro, Winston Salem , Wilson. Should I continue?

I've travelled every county in the State more times than most state residents!! I love NC. And Charlotte has been a huge success. It's based off of non natives though.

So I take it you live off Queens Or are you an outlier in Mathews?

Of course NC has places that aren't great, but you know, Fayetteville and Winston Salem would both be the biggest and best cities if they were in SC. Waxhaw is an extremely high income area. Concord would be the fourth largest city in SC and Gastonia would be fifth. Even though people like to make fun of those places, they are in a far better place economically than almost anywhere in SC.

I live about 2 miles from Queens Road. Basically downtown. Charlotte is my home and I will never live outside the city limits unless I leave the area entirely.

Charlotte's success is actually very much a success of NC natives. The great companies that built Charlotte were built by natives and taken national by natives.

Bank of America, First Union, Duke Energy, Belk, Family Dollar, and Lowes were all built by NC natives and were grown into national powerhouses by NC natives.

These guys took a sleepy little southern town and convinced snooty northerners that Charlotte was a place they should move. While transplants may be responsible for Charlotte's population growth, they are not responsible for building the companies that put Charlotte on the map.

There is a reason Charlotte is nicknamed "The City that Hugh Built" and the iconic tower in our skyline is nicknamed the Taj McColl.

Charlotte is strange for a major city. It is historically been almost like an aristocracy. There have been a handful of extremely influential and wealthy families that have guided Charlotte's development and turned it into one of the most desirable cities in the country today. The McColls, the Levines, the Belks, the Harris, and a few others have had their hand in just about every major policy, development project, and cultural project in this city. It is very much a city built by the local elite. The rest of us are just along for the ride.

Their successes have made Charlotte an attractive relocation spot for companies from around the country (and world), but the foundation for Charlotte's success is very much a homegrown success story.

I was a history major in college and the history of NC, and particularly Charlotte's development history, are hobbies of mine. I could exceed the forum message limit many times over on this topic.

Like I said, SC is fine, but it isn't really comparable to NC. They're different in a huge number of ways and as NC cities continue to grow at some of the fastest rates in the country, those differences will only grow wider.

Winston-Salem is a great city. It would easily be the 2nd best/most desirable city in SC, behind Charleston.

Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Wilmington, Asheville, Charlotte (I'm omitting Greensboro & Durham intentionally) are all nicer than any place SC has besides the Charleston/Hilton Head area. By leaps and bounds.

Agree to disagree participial army with the EZ U guy. Pitt county is crap dump. Most insecure fan base alive.

I know all about Hugh Mccolls last erection in downtown Charlotte.

Lowes is North Wlksboro but if you want to claim it.

If you were to carry out the same radius as Charlotte does, Greenvile Sc would be 900k.

Lowe's is in Mooresville. It was FOUNDED in North Wilkesboro, but they have a massive HQ in Mooresville.

Pitt County wasn't a part of the discussion. It's a low-income, rural area. Winston, Asheville, Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, etc are all much nicer than any place in SC other than Charleston. I've been all over SC numerous times, and it's a dump. Your state Capital is the biggest dump of them all. I've had the misfortune of visiting a few times when ECU has played down there.

There is no capital of the south...there is the US capital, and state capitals..."the south" lost the war, and will never rise again.

It's more likely the West coast, liberal states, will break away from our BS.

I would nominate Ft Worth from Texas.

Good Choice. Ever been to the Lonesome Dove Western Bistro in Ft Worth? Best Steak I've ever put in my mouth

It's almost as good as Cattlemen's in Stockyard City, OK 05-stirthepot

04-cheers
