Kudos to Razor for making a terrific post defending the school and the program. Well done!

Thanks for bringing that up. Razor set 'em straight.

It might have been for all student athletes, or maybe just football players, but at halftime yesterday, Selig said that ODU has the highest proportion of student athletes with a 3.0 or higher in the conference. Rice is second.

Football didn't have a 3.0..... The department released the 3.0 teams at the end of each semester and football wasn't on the list.

I heard that as well and WS was referencing football gpa's only. I was going to post something about that over there but I feel that would just serve to perpetuate the conversation. If certain of their posters make assumptions about all JUCO's being poor students that's their problem. They can choose to be elitist in defeat but it only makes them look bad. To be fair it was only one or two of them.

OK, I must have heard WS incorrectly then. Thanks. So I see you still have your sig line ptedicting a 4 win season for ODU. Interesting.

Mickey Mathews made a similar comment after we beat JMU the second time.
A William & Mary poster pointed out that W&M plays JUCOS in football and basketball.

Curiously, JMU had played JUCOs during MM's tenure, so that comment didn't get a lot of "air time" on the JMU boards.

Why would I change my sig? I see 5 wins as a possibility, as I didn't have rice as a win. Had I known they would have the players out that they had and that their starting QB would be out for a half, I probably would have said 5. I think we will beat the florida schools, but think that depth and a (brutal stretch) schedule mid season, doesn't lend us any room for error.

Didn't ODU's football team recently receive some sort of recognition for academics (I thought I saw something like that). I'm guessing that Taylor Heinicke is pretty smart and could survive in the classroom in most of these schools.

In other words you'll make some excuse saying,"I didn't see this or expect that..." Or some other bull rap. Injuries are a part of football so using that as an excuse is just that an excuse. What about the two OL we were down? Or are just opposing team's injuries the skirt you are hiding behind. 4 weeks into the season and you are already making excuses for your four win prediction.

From what I understand, some of those players could have played but were held out an extra week because it was only ODU.

Whatever, bro. If I wanted to make excuses for my prediction, I would just delete the signature. I said I didn't have us beating Rice. Not sure how that's making an excuse. If you need to know I had us losing to:

NC STATE- lost
Rice- Won
MTSU
MARSHALL
UTEP (gave them the edge because it's at their place)
WKU (same as utep)
VANDY
LA TECH

And you had us winning how many games? By all means show me your prediction (prior to the rice game).

And I like how you completely ignored the part where I said Fandom will be tested. Hell just go back and read the crap some people posted during the game.

But first copy and paste your original prediction on this thread.

RE: Game Four: Rice
I actually had us with 3 wins. Didn't think we would have much of an offense without last year's line playing an FBS schedule, but the line held up remarkably against NC State and Rice. Had us winning Hampton, EMU, and FIU.

Who cares? There were a lot of unknowns coming in and I know jack about anyone else in the conference. Before Saturday, the last time I had seen anyone from our conference play, Byron Leftwich was throwing to Randy Moss.

RE: Game Four: Rice
There is a LONG way to go with the rest of this season. Frankly...most here though we would go between 7-5 and 5-7. That seems about right. Most all said we would win a game to 2 we were predicted to lose and lose a game we were predicted to win. My biggest concern is some of our so called easier games are later in the schedule. By then our Defense could be very thin and worn out. We have got to find away to get our defense to the 4th quarter of the game and not be gassed. I am shocked that both NCSU and Rice scored most every time they had the ball in the second half. That speaks volumes. Time to forget about the RICE game and onto MTSU.

Only got in today to be able to comment on game! What a game! Huge win for ODU. Please, for the love of God Wilder, run the freaking ball when we are up 3 TDs! Let our Def get a break. Clock Management, don't be like Andi Reid.

I expect BW to have TH throw for about 500 yards and 5 touchdowns in this MTS game. He will certainly want to exploit the 5'9" cornerbacks. We will do some running but this game is on national tv. We will pass often.

Dude maybe you should look up what the word sacrilege means.

Fact of the matter is if Taylor got hurt and couldn't play for the rest of the season (and this was known at the beginning of the season) I wouldn't have predicted the W-L record that I did. Did I think we would beat Rice? no. did I factor in injuries? no. But like I asked before...

your preseason prediction was?

RE: Game Four: Rice
Regarding the Juco comment from Rice, just want to point out not all guys go the Juco route because of low grades. Many went Juco rather than FCS or DII (same thing imo) to get a second recruiting look after 2 yrs of college experience. If you go FCS/DII you’re stuck. If you heart is set on FBS and think you are good enough then Juco is the better move to get another look….just saying the Rice guy was wrong.

Let me add that there will never be an equal playing field. Many programs lower their academic standards for athletes, both with initial admissions, and ongoing coursework.

You work within the parameters given you.

Additionally, this goes beyond just academic standards.
Pinkard would likely not have missed even a practice at UNC or FSU. Conversely, Jameis Winston would have been removed from our program very early on.
It is what it is.

Areed. Jameis Winston wouldn't be on ODU's football team after he stole the crab legs, much less after causing multiple headaches for Wilder. Wilder would have punted him off the team for, "conduct not becoming a Monarch".

When debating the academic ability of our students vs. those at W&M (or Rice), I would point to the numbers. They only have about 6,000 (give or take 1K) students vs. our 25,000. I would venture to say that our top 6,000 students are not terribly far behind their 6,000.
