Playoff/Access Bowl team Wk 3
Since there is no committe rankings yet, I'll use the AP Poll.

Rose: #2 Oregon vs #3 Alabama
Sugar: #1 Florida St vs #4 Oklahoma

Orange: #22 Clemson vs #5 Auburn (ACC champ repl vs Highest SEC/B1G)
Cotton: #11 MSU vs #6 Texas A&M (B1G champ vs. At Large#1)
Fiesta: #8 LSU vs #7 Baylor (At Large#2 vs At Large#3
Peach: #9 Notre Dame vs ECU (At Large#4 vs G5).

G5 = Team with most votes. Currently ECU @ 44 votes

Left out: #10 Ole Miss, #12 UCLA, (for information purposes: #21 BYU who if part of a G5 conference would be the front runner of the G5 Bid)

http://www.collegefootballplayoff.com/overview
Base of fulfillment of contracts first then highest teams available.

No changes in top 4 but a few in the Access. ND, ECU, Clemson and LSU enter the fray.

is there a minimum requirement for independents to be at least considered for an at-large bid? Like top-15 or something??

no. It's the top teams. so like this week- Notre Dame is 9 and Ole Miss is 10- for that last spot- Notre Dame has to go instead of Ole Miss.

Really curious if BYU might force a change to that in the future. Many people consider BYU G5. Just how they made a change for the Non-BCS finishing higher than a P5 conference available to a BCS game when the cries come out. Imagine if a 12-0 or 11-1 lost out to a three loss G5 conference, the media would have a field day. And yes, I know tecnically BYU is not part of the G5 but try to convince the average fan they are not and I am not advocating but pondering. Basically, most fans think if you are not in the P5 then you are in the G5.

No BYU isn't going to force a change. Not even Notre Dame could force the change. They is why they are semi-independent by joining the ACC. This is setup all by the 10 conferences. Indy's can still be Indy but there are less option now than before.

I am not saying BYU is forcing the change as an institution. I am saying cfb fans and media questioning why say a Top 10 Independent being excluded over a lower ranked G5 champ. You could substitute any Independent Team. I think you will be seeing an increase in Football Independents in the next few years. In theory an independent could argue they are just like the G5, they don't have a tie-in to a major bowl, which ND does have. As much at the G5 argues suing, it seems like if the independents could challenge based upon the non major bowl tie-in.

If BYU makes the Top 10, they'll be an At-Large, most likely.

The At-Larges are voted/selected (not auto-bids by BCS score). I think they'd pick a #10 BYU over a #8 SEC team who'd be the 3rd SEC/PAC12 team in all the big bowls & playoffs.

BYU would need to go undefeated to make it. However, that being said, NIU & Marshall would need to go undefeated... ECU & Cinci could get in with 1 loss being the best G5.

Essentially, not being in a conference puts BYU with a tough schedule (which they have) in the same boat as having a weaker schedule since they don't want to be in a conference. I think that's a fair penalty. Especially when you know they're going to select an undefeated #9 or #10 BYU over a 3rd SEC/PAC12 team as an At-Large.

nope. It's no selection. #8 has to be selected before #10. The Bowls can't do like a few years ago the Sugar Bowl where they skipped #7 Boise to reward #11 and #13.

right now same thing coaches poll-
Sugar 1 Florida St vs 4 Oklahoma
Rose 2 Alabama vs 3 Oregon
Orange #24 Clemson vs #5 Auburn

access bowls would have
#11 Mich St (auto- Big Ten champ)
#33 East Carolina(auto-top G5 team)
the remaining 4 teams are selected as the top teams left.
#6 Baylor
#7 Texas A&M
#8 LSU
#9 Notre Dame

#10 UCLA, #12 Mississippi, #13 Arizona St can not be taken

To be exact, the committee has to rig the selections to make the results come out right.

Since the committee selects the teams for the bowls, I don't think it will be that shocking. Especially, when they take in account geography and matchup.

my hunch is they take in matchups into account as well...

with the group this week-
one game would be Baylor/Texas A&M. One would be Notre Dame/Mich St. The 3rd would be LSU/ECU.

S20, I have to disagree that #8 has to be placed. The committee clearly states it may use the following:

Create Competitive Matchups
Attempt Rematches in from previous bowls or season
Consider Geography

For Example #8 could be South Carolina and the committee may choose #10 BYU over a #9 UCLA to play say ECU in Atlanta. Otherwise, no reason to even go to a committee, could have kept the BCS rankings and just put the top 4 in and the remaining spots according to rank. Odds are they see BYU flocking to Atlanta than UCLA.

We will have to see how it works in December, but I think they have more latitude than you give credit.

what you are saying is in doing the actual matchups. The selection is done via the committee's rankings.

If you read the rules for the committee, after placement of contract bowls, the top ranked teams are filled in the remaining spots. Highest to lowest. #8 must be in before #10. This is not the BCS anymore.

We'll see.

Notre Dame has played in 21 bowls since Lou Holtz became Head Coach, and only one of them was played against a team not presently categorized as "P5". That was against Hawaii in 2008, when Notre Dame had a 6-6 record in the regular season.

While I placed the teams more toward geography, it is more to show which teams are in and which are out of the Major Bowls.
There will be alot of first's in the CFP era, and ND playing a G5 team may be one of those firsts.
Just as it was in the BCS era where the MW champ played against the B1G team in the Rose Bowl.

Or, possibly, the first time that the champion of the football conference formerly known as Big East doesn't place it's champion in a top tier bowl.

We have this discussion early in every season. With Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M all playing each other (not to mention Ole Miss), that's 6 losses to hang on 4 teams in some combination. Given the committee's stated emphasis on conference championships (only one of which can go to those SEC teams), I think it's a bit premature to assume they will eat up all of those CFP Bowl slots.
