An interesting article in the current issue of the Stanford alumni magazine on current issues in D1 sports:

The article says that Stanford is very uncomfortable with the current balance between athletics and academics for student athletes and is pushing for reforms that would help restore the balance (e.g., restrictions on organized "voluntary" practices that are widely used to circumvent the current 20 hr/week limit on mandatory practices).

The article also says that the NLRB ruling in the Northwestern case that student athletes are employees, if upheld, would likely force Stanford out of Division 1 because Stanford simply would not agree to pay athletes more than the full cost of attendance.

Good article. I like one possibility that was thrown out if Stanford needs to leave the PAC12, which was a conference of
Stanford
Rice (note we are mentioned right after Stanford)
Vanderbilt
Duke
Norte Dame (hard to believe they would ever cut back)
Northwestern

I am surprised they did not mention Tulane. Maybe the conference could be non-scholarship D1 FCS, because I do not think they would want to drop all the way to D3. I would be happy if Rice joins Stanford if they do something.
