RE: Has the luster come off Boise already?
Nah, BoiseStateofMind is most likely correct. Taking TCU insured that all those East Coast schools of the Big East, or any other conference that might have poached them from the Big East, wouldn't have regular access to the most lucrative recruiting market in the State of Texas. East Coast schools would have suddenly been able to guarantee possible recruits there that their families would have that chance to see them play.

Also, the not so Texas elements of the Big 12 would want that opportunity for themselves. TCU was a solid choice for many members of the Big 12 but for differing reasons.

TCU is "in the club" because they're in a top five media market, not because they somehow garnered any more respect than we did. Respect-wise, they shared their billing equally with Utah and us as the "BCS Busters."

I don't think the media market had anything to do with TCU getting the Big 12 bid over Boise. The Big 12 already completely owned the DFW media market, so if anything TCU was redundant from that perspective.

What helped TCU vs Boise was TCU's longstanding ties to the Big 12: TCU had been a member of the SWC for over 70 years, from 1923-1995, so were fully integrated into the Texas football culture and had rivalries with those schools.

Boise was an outsider, culturally and geographically.

No more WAC equals not more easy path to a title and less focus on the "big" out of conference games. Peterson knew that the gravy train was derailed when they left the WAC.

That's a lot of acreage with very few people.

But what else do those people have to do for entertainment? Well, there is hockey in Alberta and Minnesota (though not the NHL near Fargo) but otherwise you're more likely to get people in those areas to travel for and watch NDSU football and be passionate about it than even for Miami in South Florida unless they're winning big. The major colleges, now finally having gone D-1, are it and NDSU has a rabid following because of that factor. It's just like Wyoming, close to some of Wyoming's largest places as well as some population in an adjacent state (Denver).

As was said, TCU's market was already locked in. And Utah was not as consistent year-in, year out as the other two. I'd say SOME recognized Boise as close to being in the club but not all.

The fact is, we are rebuilding. It happens to every program at some point. Petersen ****** us for a few years by failing to replace coaches like Harsin, Wilcox, Yates, etc. with competent assistants (leading to diminishing results on the field and poor development of players) and by doing a horrible job of recruiting quarterbacks. He also completely changed the offensive system last year and it was an unmitigated disaster. The new staff is doing a fine job, especially on the recruiting trail, but it will take a while to clean up the mess that Petersen left behind.

Lol every fanbase with a new coaching staff gives some variation of this story. I know, I've been there before.

RE: Has the luster come off Boise already?
I don't think I would have used the word "already" in that question. I think it took an extraordinarily long time for the bloom to come off that rose. In a way, I think it shows precisely that fans who have always thought that teams from the non power conferences were overrated had a valid point.

Boise may well continue to be a winning program, and may even occasionally make it to an access bowl. But I don't think that most fans will criticize the P5 for not inviting them into their conferences. Five years ago, a lot of fans felt they were unjustly being snubbed. I doubt that's true anymore.

Have you seen the latest incarnation of the MWC? Who would have thought that SJSU and Utah State would be playing football in the MWC by 2014?

One thing to keep in mind is that Boise State has a LOT of tradition in football. They are like Fresno State in that regard a name always associated with strong G5 football. The public especially out West will continue to buy the idea of Boise as equivalent in quality to PAC schools in football for quite some time. On the level of Oregon and USC no but Oregon State or Washington State sure. Wins by Boise against second tier PAC teams will never again be considered a true upset.

Well, after all the doomsday predictions about our attendance, the stands look pretty full tonight.

You are charging PAC-12 prices. Most of those PAC-12 schools have trouble filling it up at those prices too.

I agree, the prices are too high. Another issue is the metal detectors at the stadium, making it a hellish experience for fans to get to their seats. Tonight, they ended up having to just let everyone skip the metal detectors.

Crowd was 39,000+ according to game announcers. One would think the Nbe/AAC boyz would learn by now to keep from shooting off their mouths about others....and simply take care of business on their home territory.

The best thing that happened for the AAC was Boise backing out...the Broncos are now a solid team in the MWC not the Powerhouse they were under Chris Petersen...07-coffee3

I think they will still be one of the top MW for years to come but their days as fixture in the top 25 are toast. I also think they've greatly overestimated their new coaching staff.

Has the luster come off? Air Force led 28-0 before a late 14 made it respectable. So the answer is "Yes the luster is gone".

Who else was finalists for the Boise HC job besides the one that was hired?

Boise has a QB problem. The rest of the team is sound. But they need better QB play to contend for the MWC title.
