NFL asking musicians to pay to play at Super Bowl
Quote:The NFL reportedly asked Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Coldplay, their top choices to play the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show, if they would be willing to pay the league in order to secure one of the biggest gigs in the world, according to The Wall Street Journal.
When reaching out to artists, league representatives asked some acts if they would exchange a headlining slot for a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour earnings, or make another type of financial contribution to the NFL. Sources told the Journal that the suggestion, perhaps unsurprisingly, "got a chilly reception from the candidates' representatives."
I guess they're using the term 'musician' fairly loosely here, although this is just ridiculous. The NFL has jumped the shark.

RE: NFL asking musicians to pay to play at Super Bowl
No surprise coming from the league that had 153 pages of demands for cities bidding to host the Super Bowl.
See the NFL's list of demands at http://www.startribune.com/local/minneap...53921.html
Quote:The NFL’s requests covered everything from free access to three “top quality” golf courses during the summer or fall before the Super Bowl, to free curbside parking at a yet-to-be designated NFL House — defined as a “high-end, exclusive drop-in hospitality facility for our most valued and influential guests to meet, unwind, network and conduct business.”
Under a six-page “Government Guarantees” section, the NFL also asked that local police provide officers, at no cost, for anti-counterfeit enforcement teams focused on tickets and merchandise. Other provisions in the section ask for government resolutions requiring “high-level management” at local airports to “cooperate with those needing special services”, including those arriving on team charters and private planes. The NFL also asked that government licensing fees be waived for as many as 450 courtesy cars and buses.
The “Government Guarantees” section, in addition, also demands that public officials create “clean zones” that cover at least a one-mile radius around the football stadium and a six-block radius from the NFL’s headquarters hotel. Creating “clean zones,” according to the NFL, typically “restricts certain activities” and “provides for the temporary suspension of new, and possibly existing, permits for such activities.”
In other parts of the bid specifications, the league asked that at least 20 free billboards “in NFL designated areas” across the Twin Cities be made available. The host city also was asked to pay all travel and expenses for an optional “familiarization trip” for 180 people to come to the Twin Cities in advance of the Super Bowl to inspect the region.
The NFL is going to be a test case for how often an organization can push its greed too far before it implodes on itself. I have a feeling the NFL has even greedier stunts up its sleeve that we'll see before too long.

I'm sure the response was something along the lines of 'kiss my ass'.

No...this just shows how powerful the NFL is...remember in their new Thursday Night deal they basically "Strong Armed" CBS to even agree to this one year deal AND they are making CBS Supply the Announcers...The Shield is in North American Sports is the End All Be All...

The NFL is just FIFA jr. in this regard. Read what FIFA made Brazil do and there you'll see a true test case.

I'd go a step further - when the NFL put its Thursday Night package for OTA up for bid, all of the networks went "Oh f**k" because whoever won that package was *guaranteed* to win that evening. That matters because Thursday is often when networks can charge the most for advertising - all of the advertisers that want you to spend money on the weekend, such as movie studios for new movies, car companies, retailers and fast food restaurants all make their last pitch on Thursday night.
So, CBS, who was by far the network that needed Thursday Night Football the least since it has the most profitable non-NFL show on TV that evening (The Big Bang Theory) didn't even want to take a chance on their ratings getting eroded and instead outbid all of the other networks that actually needed TNF even more. That shows you how powerful the NFL is today and how mortified networks are of going up against them. There wasn't any "strong arming" here - all of the networks bid heavily for TNF because the cost of *not* having TNF was even greater.

Great points...and now with the NFL again on every Thursday Night with 8 weeks on OTA Network TV JMO that really devalues the College Thursday Night Games.

That's true, FIFA and the IOC are even worse than the NFL. Brazil was bad and the extortion and bribery for the next World Cups in Russia and Qatar will be even worse.

I don't see how this is being 'greedy'. The halftime gig is valuable.

It's very valuable to the NFL, the advertisers, and the networks, because it keeps more people in front of the set and watching the commercials that air during halftime.
How valuable is it to the performers? The NFL was demanding a cut of the artist's touring revenue. Do they have any proof that playing 3 songs at the Super Bowl halftime increases the artist's ticket sales so much that giving the NFL a cut of those ticket sales is warranted? I suspect that playing at the Super Bowl is just slightly more valuable to the artist than playing a couple of songs on Letterman or Fallon -- and they don't charge artists to appear on their shows.

Next, they'll ask the players to pay them. Then again, maybe they won't go broke like on the ESPN documentary.

You mean like placing stadiums in Brasilia and the Amazon Rainforest that will never be used again?

NFL asking musicians to pay to play at Super Bowl
The musical acts that the NFL wants, don't need the NFL. This whole thing is ridiculous and I'm a NFL fan, but this is too much.

I can see a half-time show with Kenny G and Scotty McCreery. Or maybe an AMWAY gala.

Exactly. If they wanted some up and coming band I could see it, but they always bring in someone that's already well-established, famous, and successful.

I'd love for some outrageous act to pony up, and test the NFL's hand. Like a mid 90's Wu-Tang Clan or 1980's 2 Live Crew or something.
