I remember hearing that the Big East used to have a rule against serving alcohol at games, but that UC and Louisville made them drop that rule as a condition of joining in 2005. Not sure if it's true, though. Anyone know?

Not true...Syracuse has been selling beer on campus at the Dome back to at least 1980.

The Liberty Bowl is not on-campus, but it's only 2 miles away...5-6 minute drive.

You can get Memphis' own Ghost River Beer there.

Being in New Orleans Tulane besides beer definitely sells wine and possibly cocktails. You are not shaken down or searched for alcohol if you bring it in to Tulane games discretely.

Troy.

If Troy is making that much money you can only imagine how much money schools like Michigan would make off of this.

Even if the sales are restricted to a few vendor stands that are well away from student sections (they don't want the "optics" of having a beer stand right outside a student section full of 19-year-olds), you might sell 30,000 beers to a crowd of 100,000. If Michigan can squeeze $2.50 out of its vendor for each beer, that's $75,000 to the school.

IMO what's more important than $75,000 or so is that offering beer is one more way to make going to the stadium more attractive to more fans, so that fans will actually buy tickets and go instead of watching at home or at a sports bar. Beer, wifi, a wide variety of food options, things for your kids to do at the stadium -- teams are going to need all of those things and more to get fans to resist the temptation to sit in front of their HDTV with food and cold beer from their own kitchen.

I.M.O. the last thing we need in Ann Arbor (where I work) is drunk drivers, already have enough old or bad drivers in the area in a way too congested area. Then again, that would make the University and the State money... so proceed.

Kent State does sell beer and the stadium is on campus. The stadium is however not where the students directly live so you still take a 5 minute or less bus ride to get there or walk.

That's 450,000 for six home games assuming out of 100,000 only 30,000 buy one beer which is unlikely. People, will be buying the biggest option available so they don't have to get back up again.

So lets modify this equation for 35,000 people buying 3.50 worth of alcohol in 7 games. 857,500 a year is a good bit of money that could go towards student workers and maintenance crews. Or even the athletes.

There are a lot of schools with restricted sales. For example, many SEC schools (Despite what some claim) sell alcohol in suites.

It's probably not as much as some think. I know Louisville "only" profits somewhere around $1 million per year from alcohol sales. Granted that's still good extra money, but it's not as much as some would think. A school like Michigan, who has more than double the attendance and usually an extra game, might get $2 million (they would probably not get as much per person as at UofL as our fans socialize more than most blue blood schools) but for a school with the revenue that Michigan gets, it might not be worth the hassle of dealing with it.

Plus, by restricting alcohol sales, you drive up the demand for suite and club seats. When you realize you are "only" giving up $2 million, but keeping your demand higher for more expensive seats, it may not be a bad deal.

Michigan is not set up well for concessions. Certainly nothing like "modern" NFL stadiums. "Getting a beer" would cost you half the game if you include a potty break.

That is what I was getting at. It "might" get an extra $2 million. But would it be worth the headaches and the cost to make it happen? If you are in an NFL stadium or a stadium what was built with beer sales in mind (i.e. plenty of concession stands) then it will work. If not, you have to pay a lot of money to renovate to change your set up. Is it worth it?

RE: College Stadiums Where Beer is Sold
re CSU stadium

Yes, the stadium is a few miles from the main campus, located at the base of the foothills. (Gorgeous setting.) The university owns the land and the stadium. Beer is sold at the stadium -- woot!

We're in the silent phase of a capital campaign to raise a whole-buncha money in order to build a new state-of-the-art stadium on-campus. Lots of 'town hall' meetings with locals; lots of money spent on stadium designers; lots of donations made and pledges pledged. The initial deadline for OK-ing the actual construction is Oct 2014; looks like another 12 months will be granted to raise the required funds to break ground.

Back to beer: CSU currently offers a degree in Fermentation Science and Technology, with an on-campus brewery. Word on the street is that a brewery will be included in the new stadium. (No word on retail marijuana sales in the stadium.)

Is this a great school or what?
