Hey I love Hattiesburg. If I could talk my wife into moving there and we could both find gainful employment, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

This line:
"But in which college town would a grown-up with no university affiliation want to settle down?"
If you're not an Ole Miss (or MSU) alum ... do you really want to live in Oxford? NOt a chance..
Could say the same about Athens and the Bulldogs..
I'm wondering how Champaign, IL made the list... Most of that place is... NOT exactly the best living environments. Art chic type environ, yes. Standard neighborhood? Not so much.

I find Oxford a bit stuffy and affected. The whole untucked-pink-dress-shirt/Beatles haircut thing can bs a turn-off. I've never been to Athens, but I imagine it's similar.
That said, I don't hate Oxford. Starkville is a dump.

I would not really consider Tempe a "college town"…Phoenix, Tempe, and Scottsdale have all grown together into one huge metro area. I have spent a lot of time in that area and I have never gotten the "college town" vibe. Beautiful area and a lot to do along with many gorgeous women but not really what I think of when someone talks about a "college town".

Classy posts guys! Yes this is good promotion for CUSA and USM. Around the South everyone thinks unless you are at an sec school you can't have fun! Glad to prove the p5 wrong.

I agree. Tempe is far from the idealic college town. It does't even compare favorably with cross-state rival Tuson, home of the Univ of Arizona.
I like most of the "college towns" they picked for this list. But I would drop Champaign, Tempe and Moscow, ID, and replace them with Tucson, AZ, Clemson, SC, and Chapel Hill, NC. And Athens, GA would be on my honorable mention list!

In the mid 80's Starkville had a western sizzlin that actually closed between semesters
