Good plan.

a 'customer' pulling his money to show dissatisfaction with the overall product? yes, i would say that is a good plan. give me 1 reason why he should continue to donate if he is displeased?
Yeah 10+ wins for four straight years. The product blows.

Doesn't do you much good if you can't get there to watch it.

I can't get there to watch it. I still enjoy it from the comfort of my couch.

precisely....if one of the main reasons you love a team is because of the game day experience, and perhaps you have to constantly burn personal time to make weekday games, i can see how that would be extremely dissatisfying whether the team is good or bad.

It's possible the MAC is doing this without the blessing of all of the schools.

thats very true...

Smart TV's and Smart Bluerays will be in everyone's home before long. This makes the Cable/internet divide less noticeable.

TV is evolving, becoming more interactive. AmazonPrime, NetFliz and Hulu are producing new original shows. So in my mind having all football games on ESPN3 is a great thing for the conference.

If what I'm reading there is correct, that would be the end of any of our games on CSN.

We can still sub-license a game to CSN-Chi locally.

Not every MAC team has the Chicago media market to get their games on the same network as two MLB teams, an NBA team, and an NHL team, so I imagine having their games on ESPN3 no matter what is a huge upgrade, for other teams it sorta sucks. Some teams won't draw fans on Saturdays or Wednesdays, so any increased revenue they see from a bigger TV deal is fine by them. I don't know how NIU would vote in this one, but its very possible NIU is not a fan, but maybe they do like it. I don't know.

There were a number of games I tried to watch on ESPN3 that were blacked out, what's up with that? I don't know if any of the NIU games were, but it makes me wonder if we can rely on ESPN3 even for those of us that have the right carrier to get ESPN3.

Blackouts won't be an issue with ESPN as the primary rights holder

Does that mean I have to get rid of my 27 inch picture tube TV in my bedroom?

Even now, without a Smart TV or Smart Bluray Player, you can buy a streaming stick or box for $40-$90 and watch all the ESPN3 games on your TV. That's a one-time expense; there are no monthly charges for WatchESPN. And, the quality is very good, close to HD.

The cable/internet divide is pretty much gone now.

I am assuming the MAC is looking to lock in as much revenue as possible to offset the inevitable rise in costs. The playoff money and now increased TV dollars coupled with a tight geographic footprint have the league well positioned to operate at maximum efficiency.

Probably not about to be locked into the most ideal situation but it should keep us in the FBS game unless something extreme occurs with the bigger schools.

Do you really think ESPN will fork over enough cash to bail out the MAC?

I have a couple thoughts on this. Short answer is no. I think some programs in the MAC (ie EMU), based on some things their fans post believe that increased TV revenue and playoff dollars will help keep them relevant in FBS as that will offset any rise in expenses being proposed. I think that logic is flawed as everyone around them is also receving increased revenue so they aren't really gaining significant ground in "the race". I think a program like us, as long as we continue to develop out fan base, then moves like us should only enhance our position as it will put more money into our programs. The only issue I see is if we are completely selling out for the cash (ie exclusive to ESPN3 Tuesdays) to the point where it becomes overly detrimental to out fan base.

The other side of this is if the MAC were to go against ESPN (bad move as they own college football in my opinion), then you would have a league like the Sun Belt picking up the timeslots. So while I don't think the MAC is being bailed out by ESPN, there is enough mutual need to meet in the middle and help both sides. The deal in my opinion is about staying in the good graces of ESPN while also preventing another G5 from picking up ground. The TV money today is basically non-existent so we are looking at a significant increase in pay regardless which is a win for us.

Hearing MAC deal is 9 figures.Safe to assume it's closer to $100 million than $900 million. Previous deal paid about $1 million per yr.Raise

Well at worse...100mil / 13 years / 12 teams and 1 MAC office...= Around $600k per year minimum.

Our old deal got us around $100k per year so that would be a big bump but still less than half what the MWC and AAC gets.

New MAC 13-year deal w/ESPN worth over $100M, about $8M/year industry sources told @ESPN #MACtion

if this is correct its 650k per year/team...not what was hoped for.

That's a huge deal, yes.

Considering what MAC and G5 schools are going to have to shell out to keep up with P5 schools in the near future, that deal absolutely had to be made.

Ya that still puts us behind CUSA by about $300k per year. Though people actually see our games on TV so there is that.
