It would significantly hinder voting which is the main reason conservatives want this.

The U.S. government has yet to take that step, even though Americans still strongly believe English should be the nation’s officially recognized language. Most also agree overwhelmingly that it’s important to know the language to get ahead in today’s world.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 83% of American Adults believe English should be the official language of the United States. Only 10% disagree.

I bet 90 percent of those people only know one language.

Thankfully that's the same language spoken by EMT's, Police, IRS Agents...

Standards are a *GOOD* thing when you have a society to run. If someone wants to run their own personal business speaking Korean only more power to them. But if they have to call the police because of riots or an ambulance because someone collapses in the aisle it might be good if they have a basic understanding of English.

It should be *MANDATORY* to reach a certain level of proficiency if you want to be a citizen or stay on a green card for an extended length of time.

How do you say "Mitt Romney" in Spanish?

I've given you practical reasons why a basic amount of English is good for not only individuals but society as a whole. But of course when someone disagrees with you they hate immigrants..

Of course learning English is helpful but you know damn well that isn't behind this push. Would you support federal funds to help adults learn English?

Learning English should be a priority for all immigrants (and in practice, for most it is) - however, not everyone is able to pick up a second language instantly, and there needs to be a sufficient number of bilingual speakers in emergency areas (police, fire, etc).

And then there are the native Americans - one of my fraternity brothers grew up speaking only Navajo, learning English only when he went to school). There are still a number of older Navajos that don't speak English - should they be ignored?

Do federal funds help them learn our law and otehr requirements for citizenship? I would have no issues with publishing the standards foe English in other languages and making them freely available.

Understand when I say "standards" I am not even talking conversational. I'm talking something a normal adult could pick up in a week of intense study....

And by the way knowing English is far more than "helpful" if can be life saving.

There are more than 380 languages spoken in the united states, when you consider dialects you're in the thousands... THOUSANDS!

Making 1 language the standard for the government is the only sensible thing to do. What people speak in their home, shops, on the streets, in movies or song... I don't care...

But we need on common language for law and governance, we need one law for those requesting essential life saving services.

Given the fact there are thousands of spoken language/dialect combinations spoken in the united states I suppose that means we need each and every one spoken by every police department and hospital admission staff in the nation...

Starting to see why libs are so against this... Think of all the government workers in the Unions..

Or I'd like to vote for Obama can you please help me (to poll workers)...

Or are you suggesting we print thousands of different ballots?

My understanding however is that making English the official language is what is legally needed to stop publication in other languages. For example voting.

You obviously can't plan for every language spoken, or every foreign vistors. You can make reasonable accommodations based on the area you live in - Hmong in MSP, Vietnamese in Houston - etc.

Areas with large Native populations already print ballots and materials in those languages, here in Arizona. As they should

Has too much of a McCarthyism feel for my liking. Dont see the need to desginate an offical language after 100+ years of not doing so just to reaffirm what we already know.

I support any effort to educate immigrants and have zero problem with that funding...if that is what it would take. I would prefer however that they have enough damn desire to be a functioning member of society to do it without stealing from me.

BS....Coddling these damn people is why we have this problem. As long as we allow this nonsense...there is no incentive to learn English. I oppose ANY ballot being printed in any language but English.

Absolutely. It is not about anything but standards with me. I look at it as the same as the electrical codes. There is a damn reason they are national standards....safety, translation and application. Same goes for language IMO.
