Poll: 83% Of Americans Want English To Be Official Language…
MSNBC shrieks “nativists” in 3… 2… 1…
Quote: Thirty-one states have made English their official language, and five more are hoping to join the club this year. The U.S. government has yet to take that step, even though Americans still strongly believe English should be the nation’s officially recognized language. Most also agree overwhelmingly that it’s important to know the language to get ahead in today’s world.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 83% of American Adults believe English should be the official language of the United States. Only 10% disagree.

RE: Poll: 83% Of Americans Want English To Be Official Language…
I support this just as I do other standards that simplify life. There is no need for multiple official languages in a country predominated by an English speaking population. I have no problem with private use of other languages outside of governmental oversight...but....It is a waste of tax payer money to exercise multiple language platforms in regard to governmental functions. There is no telling how much money is wasted annually on just Spanish signage throughout the US.
I would not expect to be coddled and pacified if I immigrated to a non English speaking the way America does its immigrants. I thought the reason for immigration was to become a part of the nation you were immigrating to? In that regard...Nothing is more important IMO than being able to communicate effectively in the native language.

The point is that the vast majority of people who want English to be the official language only know English and are to feeakin lazy to learn another.

What makes you think laziness has anything to do with it? If someone wants to learn it, more power to them, but I spent countless hours in HS and college learning Spanish... was darn near fluent... and didn't use it once in real life so I managed to lose it quickly. It just isn't practical for most people unless it is a hobby worth spending the time on.

Maybe we should speak Creek or Choctaw? Your arguments are beyond weak on this subject.

RE: Poll: 83% Of Americans Want English To Be Official Language…
English is the language of commerce and business around the world. They teach it across the world. We, as usual, are so caught up in our racial and ethnic idiocy that we are going to deny millions of children the opportunity to partake in a world market because a minority of people don't want some group to feel inferior.
The truth is that every language, at this point in time, is inferior to English because English is what I mentioned earlier.
If you can't speak English you can't make it in the United States, or even in many parts of the world.
Not teaching English or requiring American immigrant children to learn it hurts them and creates an underclass.

Yep. It is not a leap to submit that not making it mandatory would be discrimination. I thought the left was for equality?

What is the actual impact of making English the official language? What would change?

Should be a state's right to decide on this sort of thing. I don't care if we have 0, 1, 2, or 500 official languages as long as it isn't and overreaching move by the federal government.

We tried that and the ACLU gets involved and the courts take back the state's rights.
