My personal feelings are not a judgement, but my opinion. I feel like those who commit suicide are taking the cowards way out and have no regard for those that love them.
He was bipolar, which is a mental illness. It used to be called manic depression. Ernest Hemingway had the same problem. It was part of their genius as well. But it made both men unstable, and eventually led to their deaths.
I don't blame a person for having mental problems. I've seen too many end up in similar circumstances. It's something they can't control, even on medication. Trying to balance a bipolar with meds is like walking a tightrope, and you have to keep adjusting the medication levels, because they develop tolerances. The mechanisms behind this illness is still not well understood. We are just scratching the surface on how the brain works in the best of times. How the brain's functions break down is something they are just starting to explore.

While I agree with you to some extent. Who are we to suggest we would react differently when we don't understand the hell he was going through? It has to be pretty dark to take your own life. The magnitude of his pain is something most of us will never understand.
I don't understand why entertainers, in particular comics, are really depressed and it usually leads to drug usage. I'd love to hear an explanation from a psychologist. It doesn't matter if we're talking about Chris Farley, Dave Chappelle, Robin Williams, or the next comic... most of these guys are simply unhappy. Makes me wonder if the golden age comics like Jonathon Winters, Milton Berle, and/or Don Rickels experienced deep depression.
I think it's easy for us to judge from the outside looking in.

I heard someone on the radio saying yesterday that often times comedians choose that profession because they had a crappy childhood. They said a lot comics come from broken homes, abusive situations or maybe they were made fun of a lot in school.
He said that what usually happens is they do something funny and make people laugh and they experience a form of acceptance for the first time so they dive into that persona for approval of their peers but the inner self loathing never goes away.

I lose respect for those who do... just like I lose respect with those who struggle with mental illness for a Long Time and constantly struggle with it to it. It doesn't mean I don't have respect for them as a person at all -- it just lowers the bar depending on who they are, circumstances, etc.
Now, there is one rumor. He was half naked by some reports when doing it. And that low-middleweight boxer who was a little famous in the boxing world, he was thought of as committing suicide, but really -- he was doing a self-inflicted "masturbation" where you suffocate (to increase orgasmic feeling). There's a rumor floating around that Robin Williams may have fell victim to that.
Yeah, I know... "too soon" to mention something like that -- but that stuff Does happen. And, well, Robin Williams would be someone to possibly consider such a fun/funky thing. And with no suicide note + being famous for imagery -- it's "hush hush" to consider such things. Just sayin'.
Quote:Robin Williams also had cuts on his wrists from a penknife. Is that generally associated with gaspers?
Tu che. However, why would you want to want someone to shoot you while hanging? And he wasn't hanging completely -- which is corresponds to what I'm referring to.
Why would you want someone to fire at you while semi-hanging? It's like kicking a field goal (as a goal) but also aiming for something different at the same that wouldn't increase your chances of success -- but possibly ruin it?
I'm not saying he Didn't die to what was expressed to the press. I'm just saying that IF he did do otherwise (and even saying "Fvck it if I die vs greatest orgasm ever") -- it would be Super Hush Hush.
So to answer your question directly: What direction? Across wrists is Attention. Down forearms is "This is what I want".
HUGE difference. And he'd die of blood loss before a semi-hanging that resembles what the boxer did (to keep it relevant to Him and sports).

See blah. I look at if differently. I feel once you get to a certain age its okay. The man was in his 60's. Not much left to look forward at that point. Now I do think he could of milked a few more good years out before he ended it. But its his decision. He had taken the time to set up trust funds for his children and his wife gets everything else.

A pen knife isn't exactly the preferred option for slashing your wrists. Unless you take care to sharpen it first, all it's going to do is make very painful scratches.

Have you seen the heartache, pain and overall craziness that it has cause his daughter? I stick by my assessment....Coward.
If you have a broken bone, tear a ligament, or some other obvious injury or illness, everyone feels sorry for you. But if you have a mental illness, everyone acts like it's your fault. It's a sad comment on our society.

I disagree....I feel bad for the person with the broken bone, etc. when they get it due to an accident. I do not feel bad for them when they get it by being stupid (i.e. jumping a skateboard, etc.)
Watched Insomnia and Dead Poets Society last night. AWESOME dramas involving him. He was always balls out crazy and it amazed me to see him tone it down when he did his dramatic works. It almost gave those characters a completely different spin knowing the actor.

Death always causes those feelings. Its not cowardice to finally be done with suffering.

Once again you either ignore - or totally miss - my point.
Mental illness still carries a stigma which taints those suffering from the problem, so that they seem to continually be blamed for something totally beyond their control. And nobody wants to address the issue for fear of contaminating themselves with the mental problems of the effected. I often fear for the evolution of our species. Many people still live in the Dark Ages in their minds. It's like they're saying that their ignorance is as good as anyone's intelligence. Trust me. It isn't.
